Although this little gouache by Pablo Picasso has been mistakenly identified as a study for his most inventive work, Les Demoiselles D'Avignon, it is really a preliminary work for Nude with Cloths, a painting painted shortly after. However, while some scholars place the execution of the Study in the winter of 1906-1907, it is most likely that it took place in Paris during the summer of 1907, when the painter was working on the painting. Nude with Cloths is a solitary depiction of the second female figure in Les Demoiselles, in which she extends the concept of the veil dance. If the geometric composition of Les Demoiselles is considered a "reaction" of Picasso to Derain's Bathers, which shocked him at the Salon des Indépendants in March 1907, in this Nude, the painter "challenges" the rhythms of Matisse's Blue Nude, exhibited in that same exhibition. The nude dancer moves like a medium, bewitched by some mysterious music, in a gesture delivered with her eyes closed. On the other hand, her movement reveals more to us than meets the eye and, as Pierre Daix puts it, Picasso manages to create "only with her rhythms a true depth." With this innovative solution, the artist not only solves the problem of painting in three dimensions, but also unstoppably begins the path towards cubist language.
