The Dirty Nil is the kind of band that makes you remember why being a Groupie is the best thing in the world.

In a time where there is seemingly barbed wire on backstage doors and where the political climate is heavy and thick with sadness and frustration, it’s refreshing to spend time with a band that makes you temporarily forget wtf is happening in 2017 and make you feel present and happy to be exactly where you are right now.

Chanty met Luke, Kyle and Ross of The Dirty Nil before their soundcheck at Lee’s Palace on Friday June 16th to chat about they’ve been up to for the past 5 years since the last time they all spoke.

This week Chanty and Lynx step back in time to give you the story behind dream lovers Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee. Joined by modern day crooner and friend Alex Bird, Lynx and Alex tell Chanty not only Sandra’s life story but Bobby’s as well.

Both Sandra and Bobby’s childhood experiences with illness and abuse would forever shape both of their careers and their relationship with one another. Meeting on set in Italy in 1960 it was (almost) love at first sight for Bobby and Sandra. By the end of the shoot the pair were engaged and would marry within 3 months of meeting. Within the year, Sandra would be pregnant with their son Dodd. While they truly loved each other, they both were struggling with issues stemming back from childhood.

Having given a life expectancy he’d already passed, Bobby was determined to become a legend before it was too late, pouring all of his energy into his career in both music and film. Sandra was more self destructive, having experienced sexual abuse since the age of 5 and being raised by an overbearing mother with strange ideas involving mealtimes; Sandra would rebel by limiting her food intake and self medicating with alcohol. While their personal issues would lead to their eventual divorce, they would remain very close until Bobby’s death at the age of 37 in 1973. Bobby’s death would hit Sandra hard and she would never again be with another man.

It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that Sandra would publicly discuss the traumas of her childhood and face her alcoholism and anorexia. In 1993 their son, along with Sandra’s help wrote ‘Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin & Sandra Dee’. Sandra received an outpouring of love and would spend her remaining years close with her son and 2 grandchildren.

Nowadays it’s rare to find a performer like Darin who can do it all which is one of the reasons our friend Alex Bird is so special. Like Darin, he’s a man of many talents. We want to thank Alex for joining us and for all of his insight.

Denise Donlon began her career in music as a Much Music VJ in 1985 and by 1992 was named director of Music Programming before becoming VP and General manager in 1997. In the year 2000 Denise became the first female President of Sony Music Canada and remained there for 4 years. From 2008-2011 Denise was the Executive Director of CBC English Radio. She has devoted herself to numerous charitable initiatives, working with organizations such as WarChild Canada, MusicCounts, and the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership. She is a Feminist, a Humanist and a bad ass Social Activist. Denise also knows first hand that David Bowie always smelled like he had just gotten out of the shower. She has worked with and befriended many Canadian music LEGENDS such as Murray McLauchlan (who also happens to be her husband!), Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Denise Freakin’ Donlon at our Muses Headquarters where we got to pick that beautiful brain of hers. We ask such questions as: Is there a fine line between a Foolish and a Fearless Question? Why is it important to mix music and World Issues? and Which musicians today embody the Music + Meaning = Magic formula?

Chanty comes out of yet another closet, the girls are so enthralled by Denise that they forget to take a picture and the girls bliss out about how they were brought by Denise to Jazz/Peace Heaven. Other amazing Canadian bands discussed this episode are The Jerry Cans, A Tribe Called Red, Tanya Tagaq and Les Haybabies.

This week's episode is all about Chris O'Dell! She was a muse to George Harrison (he wrote a song about her called Miss O'Dell), Leon Russell (he wrote a song about her called Pisces Apple Lady) and she was the woman in the hall in a Joni Mitchell song. She's on the back cover of Exile on Main St., typed all of the lyrics to "All Things Must Pass" and it was somewhere in Dallas that she "started sleeping with Mick Jagger". She witnessed the love triangle between George, Pattie and Eric Clapton and got involved in a Beatles love triangle herself. She's a licensed professional counsellor and substance abuse counseller with degrees in Luck, Good Friends and Being in the right place at the right time!

Chris O’Dell was one of the first employees at Apple Records. She was an assistant to Peter Asher, working her way in to the lives, careers and hearts of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Leon Russell and Bob Dylan.

Chris was a friend, a confidante to many a musician and their wives. She is the woman on the back cover of the Rolling Stones’ album Exile on Main Street, she typed all the lyrics to the songs on George Harrison‘s All Things Must Pass and she stood as a bridesmaid for Pattie Boyd when she married Eric Clapton.

Chris’ life and her stories are incredible. We read her book: Miss O’Dell: My Hard Days and Long Nights with the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and they Women They Loved.

We tell you about the time she lived at Friar Park with George and Pattie, witnessing the love triangle between them and Eric Clapton. She even became involved in her own Beatles love triangle- tune in to find out which Beatle and wife that was! We talk about how they preferred affairs to be “kept in the family”, and how that often in Rock and Roll, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time.

We are left with a few questions to ask Chris, so we may  just look her up and ask for ourselves. Oh won’t you call meeeeeee, Miss O’Dell?
