Listen Later

On this episode of the podcast we are meeting two Irish composers who contributed to the recent Music Current Festival 2025.

Music Current Festival is an annual contemporary music festival produced by Dublin Sound Lab. The festival offers a showcase of contemporary Irish and new international electronic music in an accessible and friendly environment. As well as the main concert programme, the festival includes workshops, professional development classes, and public panel discussions.

This year Danny spoke with and attended workshops by Timothy Cape and Shane Latimer.

Shane is a musician based in Dublin who plays 6, 7, and 8 string guitars, and synthesizers. At this years festival he performed as part of Dublin Sound Lab, as well as hosting a workshop exploring contemporary guitar techniques

Before meeting Shane, we’ll talk with Tim Cape. Timothy is an Irish composer who combines notated music, improvisation, physicality and text to create visceral music-theatre works which engage with contemporary political issues in unusual and playful way.

At this year’s Music Current, he led a workshop on inter-disciplinary performance, guiding participants through methods to generate performance material using instruments, voice, text, objects and movement. He also collaborated with the Paris-based ensemble soundinitiative to premiere a new work called Soother. We spoke about this, the development of his creative practice, and the importance of creative spaces for contemporary music.
