Dr. Jorgensen and Dr. McLain’s institution largely serves students from a region with underfunded and underserved school districts, resulting in students entering college with little to no prior formal musical training or experiences. Based on Dr. McLain’s time spent working as an Academic Mentor for a competitive NCAA Division I football program, they have been developing and implementing educational scaffolding systems and inclusive pedagogy techniques at their institution to support these students so they not only develop the prerequisite skills traditionally expected of incoming music majors, but also the subsequent skills necessary for success as musicians or music educators after graduation.
