What do you get when you take 100 singers and provide them bring 65 pieces of music, in 16 different languages, spanning over 600 years of music history all written by a diverse array of composers (including a singer in the room), and give them a couple of days to sing through it all? Well, in Florida, they call it a “Reading Chorus.” 

In this conversation, we break it down with FMEA’s 2023 Reading Chorus Clinician, Dr. Peter Steenblik. He shares tips, tools, techniques, and ideas that he used and that you can immediately apply to your musical space. What do space, the International Space Station, rockets, and recorders have in common? You’re about to find out as this episode features music and STEAM education pioneer, Laurie Orth. While we talk about how space and music education collided in her world, we also explore how you too can “get it together,” learn new things, and ultimately do cool things, such as how Mrs. Orth brings together the contrasting disciplines of space exploration and music. 

Laurie Orth is passionate about creating a pipeline for young people into STEAM through music. She is an independent contractor at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in Augusta, Georgia. In 2019, she published Rocket Recorder, an innovative music workbook that introduces space content to young people. Rocket Recorder is certified by the Space Foundation’s Space Certification for Education™ program. She has presented her space-themed music curriculum for professional development to educators internationally. Ms. Orth serves as a Space Station Ambassador for the International Space Station National Lab, is a Space Foundation Teacher Liaison, and she volunteers with the Air & Space Forces Association. She was selected as a social media influencer by NASA. She is the soprano section leader for the Chancel Choir and the Junior Choir Director at St. John United Methodist Church in Augusta, GA. She sings professionally and is a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Educators.

Yogi Guyadin (better known as “Y?”) is an interdisciplinary “Artivist” and educator born in Queens NYC. He expresses this through artistic mediums of music production/ composition, songwriting, vocals, live instrumentation, theater, and HipHop. As an arts educator, he founded www.CreativeExpressions.co in 2012 to create environments to impact, educate and empower using “Cypher Pedagogy” a technique based on non-hierarchical learning rooted in the foundation of HipHop culture. He has written curricula, designed workshops, and performed his original work nationally and internationally from open mics, classrooms, and festivals to conferences with the United Nations.

In this episode, we talk about Y?’s journey in creative endeavors, but we also talk about Artivism (Art+Activism), the plight of modern musicians, education reform, Creativity, and Mental Health. Specifically, you’ll learn ideas for teaching fundamentals as well as all about the “Cypher Based Pedagogy” method. You’re about to learn steps for creating environments that “impact, educate, and empower.”
