This week’s program creates an atmosphere of ‘noir’. The term embraces urban landscapes, mood and atmosphere, crime figures/secret agents/private eyes and rainy or foggy weather. Most noir films were in black and white. We attempt to evoke all these ‘noirish’ elements through our selection of music. Setting the scene early is the atmospheric ‘Harlem Nocturne’ an instrumental from The Viscounts. Several songs are about criminals (Mack The Knife, Ma Baker and Mr Kiss Bang Bang) or secret agents/private eyes (Secret Agent Man and Peter Gunn). Other songs evoke the ‘noirish’ atmosphere such as Ralph McTell‘s ‘Streets Of London’ or Simon & Garfunkel‘s ‘Bleecker St’.
