Not your typical pop Artist/Influencer, Dena is one of the very few female artists based in Taiwan who has the ability to self-produce songs from scratch with a global competitive taste in pop music. Having participated in numerous singing competitions, and record label deals, enrolled in Berklee College of Music, and written songs for mainstream artists based in both Taiwan and China, she has grown to be very experienced and familiar with the pop music industry. Besides being an artist, songwriter, and producer, she is also an influencer with a following of nearly 300k followers.

Joy Yoon is a Korean-American singer-songwriter artist from Austin, Texas. Joy, coming from a classical composition background, was acknowledged as an award-winning young composer at the 2015 Austin Symphony Orchestra Young Composers Competition. While studying at The University of Texas at Austin, she discovered her passion for writing indie/R&B pieces along with coming up with her own lyrics. She decided to move to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a degree in songwriting at Berklee College of Music, along with taking courses in music business and production. Joy is a bilingual songwriter, who is now writing in both Korean and English. 

In this episode, Joy tells us her journey as a Korean-American independent artist - faced multiple challenges such as facing an identity crisis, culture stock, self-worth, and eating disorder but shows and expresses so much growth through it all.

In this episode, I invited a special guest, Liat Shapiro, who was born in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, but adopted and raised in the Boston area. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in spring 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics. As a Korean adoptee, it has been Liat’s dream to give back to the South Korean orphanage community. She is excited to be serving on KKOOM’s Board of Directors and looks forward to helping her younger brothers and sisters achieve their dreams.
