On this Fourth Sunday of Advent, The Rev. Nancy Bryson, Deacon at St. George Episcopal Church, discusses how the lighting of the Advent candles has brought more light into the world as daylight shortens and there is more darkness and sadness in our world. As believers we know that along with this darkness shines the light of God – Jesus. God always is with us and will remain with us until we reach the light. The fourth Advent candle is the candle of love; this is also the day when the Gospel reading is Mary’s song – the Magnificat. Although the word “love” does not appear in Mary’s song, the emotions it stirs are compassion and love. Jesus is the light of love and is the perfect example of God’s compassion and love. As Advent comes to a close, we need to think of the special blessings God has given us. We need to see the signs of hope, peace, joy and love- then we can see Jesus. It is with this special vision that we can see the good in the world so we can discover what the seasons of Advent and Christmas are about.
