In this homily on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, The Rev. Ed Bartle, Associate Rector of St. George Episcopal Church, discusses Jesus’ characterization as the “good shepherd”. Fr. Bartle says that Jesus is ready to help us and lead us and that without Him we are lost and just wander around. Jesus is the “good shepherd” because he possesses more than efficiency, strength, fidelity, and power. Jesus also exhibits a type of loveliness; he shows his flock love and compassion, knows the names of his flock, and places his body between his flock and harm. Fr. Bartle concludes that we are called to continue Jesus’ work by using this type of leadership and have faith that Jesus will lead the way and will help us overcome obstacles in our way.
