What secrets are hidden in the cuneiform descriptions of Gilgamesh’s weapons?

In this episode of Musings on Mysteries and the Mythical Matrix, we team up with Andrew from WeaponsTalk Podcast to explore the legendary weapons of Gilgamesh through ancient texts, weapon history, Sumerian, Akkadian, and Bronze Age archaeology.

We break down the weapons mentioned in the Sumerian and Akkadian traditions, including axes, daggers, swords, hatchets, and possibly even bows or javelins. From Sumerian terms like aga-silig, giri₂, and a₂-aš-gar, to Akkadian words like kakkum, ḫaṣṣinnu, and patru, we examine what these ancient terms may actually tell us about Gilgamesh’s arsenal.

Then we compare those weapons to real Bronze Age examples, including the famous Arslantepe swords, early stabbing blades, axes as both tools and weapons, and the difference between cutting, thrusting, and battlefield practicality.

But the biggest twist comes from the texts themselves: the weights.
Some traditions describe Gilgamesh’s weapons as weighing far beyond anything a normal human could use. In the Akkadian material, the axes and daggers are described in talents. In the Sumerian tradition, the axe Gilgamesh uses against the Bull of Heaven is described as weighing seven talents: roughly 462 pounds.

So what do we do with that?

Was this classic mythological exaggeration? Did later Babylonian scribes make an impossible detail more believable? Or does this reveal something deeper about how ancient people remembered heroes, weapons, and power?

Finally, we apply the Gyges Principle: when myth and history collide, the line between “impossible legend” and “ancient memory” is often shaped by the assumptions we bring to the evidence.

Is the Ring of Gyges just a myth… or does it reveal how difficult it can be to separate mythology from history?

In this episode of Musings on Mysteries and the Mythical Matrix, we break down the story of Gyges of Lydia: a man remembered in both myth and history as someone who rose to power through secrecy, betrayal, and the death of a king.

We explore Plato’s version of Gyges, where a shepherd discovers a mysterious ring on a dead giant and learns that it can turn him invisible. With this power, he seduces the queen, kills the king, and takes the throne.

Then we turn to Herodotus’ historical account, where Gyges is a bodyguard of King Kandaules, forced into a dishonorable situation involving the queen, trapped by her ultimatum, and ultimately pushed into killing the king and becoming ruler of Lydia.

From there, we ask the big question: Are Plato and Herodotus telling two completely different stories… or are they preserving different versions of the same ancient event?

We examine the real historical Gyges of Lydia, his connection to Ashurbanipal, the timeline between Herodotus and Plato, the role of local myth, and how ancient traditions can preserve history while also reshaping it through symbolism, philosophy, and cultural memory.

And finally, we introduce the Gyges Principle: the idea that the line between myth and history is not always fixed. Sometimes what we call “myth” or “history” depends less on the evidence itself and more on the assumptions we bring to the story.

Is the Kirta Epic connected to the Bible… or are we seeing the shared cultural world of the ancient Near East?

In this episode of Musings on Mysteries and the Mythical Matrix, we break down the Ugaritic myth of Kirta, also known as Keret: a Bronze Age king who loses his family, receives a divine command from El, restores his dynasty, breaks a vow, falls under judgment, and is ultimately restored.

We explore the story’s major themes: divine dreams, royal succession, broken vows, sickness, restoration, and El’s authority over the other gods.

We also tackle the big comparative question: Do the parallels between Kirta and biblical figures like Job, David, and Solomon prove that the Bible repurposed Ugaritic myth… or do they reveal common themes and challenges across the ancient Near Eastern world?

Is the Aqhat Epic connected to the Bible… or part of a deeper mythological network?
