There is consensus among the scholars that it is sunnah to visit the grave of the Prophet, sallAllahu ^alayhi wa sallam, both for he who lives in al-Madinah and he who travels there for the express purpose of visiting the Prophet’s grave, and doing so is a great act of obedience. Qadi ^Iyad and an-Nawawiyy both reported the scholarly consensus Ijma^ on this issue. It is sunnah for the visitor to also have the intention to travel to pray in the mosque of the Prophet.

Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wasallam said:من زار قبري وجبت له شفاعتي which means: “He who visits my grave, will be granted my greatest intercession.” This hadith is reported by ad-Daraqutniyy and strengthened by Hafidh as-Subkiyy.

إنّ الأمةَ المحمديّةَ أجمعتْ على جوازِ زيارةِ قبرِهِ عليه الصلاةُ والسلام، واعتبروها قربةً إلى اللهِ وفضيلةً مُرَغَّبا فيها، وهذا الإمامُ المجتهدُ المُطْلَقُ تقيُّ الدِّينِ السُّبكيُّ ينقُلُ الإجماعَ على ذلك في كتابِ " شِفاءُ السَّقام"، وقد روى الطبرانيُّ والبيهقيُّ وغيرُهما أنَّ النبيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قال:" مَنْ حَجَّ فزارَ قبري بعدَ وفاتي فكأنَّما زارَنِي في حياتي"، وروى البيهقيُّ بإسنادٍ صحيحٍ عن مالِكِ الدَّارِ وكانَ خازنَ عُمَرَ قال: أصابَ الناسَ قحطٌ في زمانِ عمرَ فجاءَ رجلٌ إلى قبرِ النبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فقـــــال : يا رسولَ اللهِ اسْتَسْقِ لأُمَّتِكَ أيِ اطلُب مِنَ اللهِ أن يُنْزِلَ المطر فإنَّهم قد هَلَكُوا معناه قاربُوا الهلاك فأُتيَ الرجُلُ في المنام أي رأى رسولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في منامِه فقيل له أَقْرِئ عمَرَ السَّلامَ وأخبِرْه أنهم يُسقَونَ وقُل لهُ عليكَ الكَيْسَ الكيس معناه اجتَهد في أمرِ الأُمّة فأَتى الرَّجُلُ عُمَرَ فأخبَرَه، وهنا انتَبِهُوا جيِّدا إخوةَ الإيمان، فهذا الرَّجُلَ فُسِّرَ ببلالِ بنِ الحارثِ المزَنِيِّ وهو مِنَ الصحابة، يُخبِرُ مَن؟ يخبِرُ الفاروقَ عمَرَ الذي كان معروفًا عَنهُ أنَّهُ كانَ شديدَ الإنكارِ للباطِل، أخبَرَه أنَّه ذهبَ إلى قبرِ الرسولِ عليه الصلاة والسلام وقالَ يا رسولَ اللهِ اسْتَسْقِ لأُمَّتِكَ فإنهم قد هلَكوا، وأخبَرَه أي أخبرَ عمرَ أنَّه رأى رسولَ اللهِ في المنام، وقالَ لهُ: أقْرئ عمرَ السّلام، وأخبِرْه أنهم يُسْقَوْنَ، وقُل له عليك الكيس الكيس، فبكَى عمرُ، بَكى أميرُ المؤمنينَ عمرُ الفاروق، ولم يُنْكِرْ عليه، وقال: يا رَبِّ ما ءَالُو إلا مَا عجَزْتُ، أي لا أُقصِّرُ معَ الاستِطَاعَة.
