  • A child of the Great Depression | A conversation with Author and Historian Tom Schiffer

This week's podcast is a little different, we are sitting down with Author and Historian Thomas Schiffer about "The History of the NMLRA" and early 1900s Muzzleloading.

Tom has always been a family friend at the range, but I never knew about how much he cared about history. History of the United States, World War 2, and the NMLRA. In 2017 he began writing "The History of the NMLRA", a comprehensive history on the origins of the NMLRA. You'd imagine this book is full of board minutes and photos of men in suits shooting chunk guns, but Tom quickly found out that history isn't so much about the paperwork as it is about the personalities involved.

Tune in to this episode to hear more, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

This month was a little slow on releases with the Christmas rush, but we've got an action-packed January planned. We'll be talking to Mark Humphries of the "Black Powder Maniac Shooter" Youtube Channel at his Annual New Year's Day Shoot. We'll also be heading out to the SHOT Show in late January to bring you Muzzleloading focused coverage of the event.

A special thanks this week to the guys at Primitive Pursuit for sponsoring the podcast! Primitive Pursuit was founded in 2017 to be an outlet for learning experiences as a traditional bowhunter.  The truth is, someday’s it will throw you to the wolves.  However, when the gap is closed and you’re finally able to take your shot, it’s all worth it.  Everything comes  together.  Though we’re relatively new to the game, we feel it is our  duty to help those that may go through similar successes and failures.   We truly believe traditional bowhunter’s are among the best hunters in the world.

We couldn't have this conversation, the podcast or anything here at the NMLRA without the support of our members. Everything we do is made possible because of their generosity. Thank you.

  • Master Bowmaker and Archer Navio Occhialini on why he loves teaching, traditional archery, and muzzleloaders

We're very excited to bring you an interview with Navio Occhialini in this week's episode. Navio has been a staple of the NMLRA traditional archery range for decades now, he's one of the founding members of the archery range itself and has watched over it at each NMLRA event since it's founding.

We caught up with him Monday morning at the NMLRA National Championships in September 2019 to talk about his personal history in the craft, his bi-annual bowmaking class, and a bit about why he keeps teaching.

On the NMLRA youtube channel, you'll find more videos from Navio about the types of traditional bows, the history of the longbow in America, as well as his walkthrough of one of the NMLRA Archery woods walks, a challenging course with over 40 3D archery targets.

  • The Romance of the Smoke - Longhunter Society Record Breaking Pronghorn with Eric Stanosheck

We’re excited to announce a new episode of the Muzzle Blasts Podcast this week. For this episode, we’re talking to big-game hunter and Longhunter Society Record holder Eric Stanoshek about his record-breaking pronghorn trophy.

In this episode, Eric recounts this record-breaking pronghorn hunt, but also his history with modern high power rifles and his eventual conversion to hunting exclusively with muzzleloaders.

For Eric there is something special about the one-shot challenge of muzzleloader hunting, he calls it “The Romance of the Smoke”.  This love of hunting and muzzleloaders runs in his family, three of his four kids and his wife hunt with muzzleloaders.

Having hunted with muzzleloaders since the early 2000s, Eric has gone on 66 big game hunts and has 42 animals recorded in the Longhunter Society program.

For him, hunting and using Muzzleloaders is about the relationship with the gun. Unlike modern firearms, muzzleloaders can be a little tricky, and that’s what Eric likes. He says, “For me, hunting with a muzzleloader is about how close I can get and how much time do I get to spend with the animal.”

  • Reliving History by Surviving in a Dugout Canoe

We sit down with living historians Eli Froedge and Jason Jacobs at the 2019 Feast of the Hunter's Moon to talk about their dugout canoe expedition of the Wabash River.

Eli and Jason are dedicated to living the history of our forefathers, crafting their clothing, tools, and accouterments for their historical treks into the wilds of Indiana. Some may refer to them as reenactors, but they prefer "living historians", following the guides set by books and journals from early America.

Additional photos and videos of the expedition provided by Jason Jacobs, Eli Froedge, and Heath Hoffman. Thank you for letting us use your photos and videos!
