When was the last time you looked at a stranger and said hello? For many of us, that’s hard to do. Imagine if you COULD bravely say hello, if you then swapped stories and were influenced by one another. Imagine, just for a moment, what ripple effect that would have. Hunter Franks, San Francisco-based artist transforming public space into places of conversation and connection, shares his experience and advice on taking the road less traveled and making your introduction to the next face you see.
Hunter’s journey’s about creating art that intervenes in the social and physical landscape of our urban environments. His participatory installations in public space break down barriers and help us reimagine our relationships with each other, our neighborhoods, and our cities. Projects include a 500-person dinner on a freeway, a storytelling exchange to connect disparate neighborhoods, a public display of first love stories and more. In 2011 he walked from Los Angeles to New Mexico — an experience that continues to fuel his desire to tell the stories of underrepresented people and places.
The inspiration you need to be a contributor in your community and build a greater sense of connection with the world starts NOW!
