A total picture of pioneer life..
For those not satisfied with their lot in life reading this book will put it in proper perspective. I do believe it an accurate portrayal of 19th century Americana pioneering.
A look at American pioneer history
Writing marvelously with its mastery of style and dialect Cather brings the modern reader back into a time long forgotten
Easy summer reading about a bygone era
Easy summer reading about a bygone era. It's a good reminder of how easy we have it now, people really had to struggle just to stay alive, but in many cases their hard work and perseverance paid off.
Antonia
From their time as children, growing up in the same small, rural town in the Midwest, Antonia and Jim Burden (the person telling the story) sought to overcome difficulties. Antonia is a strong woman who was beloved by her peers. The main characters are carved out very well and evolve through the years; moreover, the novel places the reader in the middle of the era in which Antonia and Jim lived. I read this book many years ago for the first time, but definitely appreciated revisiting it. Cather was a great writer.
A girl who plucks the heartstrings
It's been awhile since I read My Antonia so memory fades. The story takes place in rural Nebraska at the turn of the century which brought a lot on insight as to conditions of the period which, if you were poor, were extremely difficult. The book is really about two families, one older and established (the Burdens) and fairly well-to-do whereas the other family were newly immigrated from Easter Europe (the Shimerdas) and very poor. When Jim Burden first saw his new neighbor (Antonia Shimerda) get off the train he probably fell in love with her then. But the tale alternates between the two families and despite his closeness to Antonia he is too shy to express his feelings for her. Her early life in their new farm is dreadful. They have nothing; not enough to eat, no warm clothing, no money. Without help from the Burdens they just were not going to make it. It is difficult not to fall under Antonia's spell but she makes some careless life decisions and I was disappointed with the resulting consequences.
