Hello, you!
Welcome back to my Audio Journal.
In this entry, I want to talk about something many of us have a deep connection to: cars. Growing up, the ultimate symbol of success was a German car. Whether it was a GTI, a BMW, or a Merc, seeing one in the neighbourhood meant someone had truly 'made it.' It was a tangible representation of wealth and aspiration that was ingrained in us.
But how does that childhood dream hold up against our current economic reality? Today, I’m wrestling with this question. As we face new financial pressures, practical needs are starting to outweigh old loyalties. The rise of impressive and affordable Asian car brands is forcing us to rethink what we value. Are we still tied to the status of a German brand, or are we simply looking for the best way to get from A to B?
This episode unpacks the social currency of our cars, the strategic shifts by major brands, and the big question: were these luxury cars always expensive, or just inflated?
