  • MBFH058: How To Protect Your Time and Become More Productive in Your Work with Alex Marquez and Kingsley Grant

✅ Ep. 058: How To Protect Your Time and Become More Productive in Your Work with Alex Marquez and Kingsley Grant

Here's a summary of the conversation between Alex Marquez and Kingsley Grant.

➡️ How do you define legacy and what legacy do you want to leave behind?

Legacy is the ability to achieve greatness and has major accomplishments. It is raising my kids to be intelligent people and to pursue what it is they want to do. It is passing on to my children my ideologies and philosophies in life.

➡️ How did you arrive at this definition. Was it handed down to you?

I've always loved philosophy; challenging my thoughts and ideas. I see knowledge as a bucket that can never be filled enough. The more you use it up the more you can put in there.

➡️ Tell us a little about your entrepreneurial journey

    • I started out as a child, selling rocks to my friends in school. Once I figured it out and saw the results, I was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug.
    • Along with my brother, we were able to open a burger shop. We eventually were able to add family members to the team.
    • From this point, it was evident that having a business was the thing to do.
    • Migrated to the USA with $300 in my pocket, the clothes I packed in my car, and unemployed.
    • Knowing that family members were there who could help me if the worst thing happened, it made it easier. We have a close-knit family.
    • Worked several jobs along the way to make ends meet. Even though family stood ready to help, I wasn't going to depend on it. I was going to figure it out.
    • As I kept moving forward, things began to fall into place. I was determined to do something for myself.
    • It all led to where I am today.

    Today, Alex's company:

    1. Offer brokerage transportation for large equipment/freight
    2. Operates as a logistics contractor/consultant to do the work, saving businesses money

Pros of doing business from home

    • time to spend with his young child, while his wife works outside the home
    • save dollars in not having to pay daycare for child

Cons of doing business from home

    • won't work as hard because he's on his own time
    • keeping your eyes on the prize

    Setting boundaries:

    • when the door is closed it means "I'm at work!"
    • communicate to everyone what is going on

  • MBFH057: How To Build A Business On The Side When There's No Time with Kingsley Grant

✅ Here's a summary of what was discussed in this coaching/feedback episode:

    1. Breaking down the project into smaller tasks
    2. Doing a time analysis
    3. Getting clarity on the business idea

Christopher Hayles' entry on Facebook contained the following:

"Ok gents, I'm at a loss.

    • 3 kids 5-16,
    • work full time for a consultancy company that works closely with Microsoft. We do cloud migrations, automation, data science and business intelligence. Lots of highly sought after stuff.
    • Obviously, this is pretty well paid."
    • …
    • I'm not wasting a bunch of time. I rarely watch tv, I play soccer once a week, I time limit my social media, I don't get enough sleep as it is. I'm just kinda stuck.

Question: How have you managed to break away from the routine to build something on the side? Is it necessary to let some of the other plates drop, temporarily?

DILEMMA ➡️ I've long wanted to break out on my own, but somehow seems there's no time whatsoever to work on any personal projects that could eventually turn into a business.

      • First: Choose a project - singular - that ties in with your business
      • Second: Break down the project into small tasks
      • Third: Work on one little task at a time maybe one each day or week
    • When the project is looked at as a whole, it appears as one gigantic mountain; impossible to scale
    • When it is broken down and given its own focus, the size shrinks

DILEMMA ➡️ Usually there's barely enough time to take care of myself after taking care of everyone else and my full-time job.

      • First: Do a time analysis by putting it all down on paper
      • Second: Track your time over a 2-week period and see how you are spending your time. Be brutally honest
      • Third: Look over the data and see what is there that was a time-waster or can be removed

DILEMMA ➡️ I also have a hard time justifying (to myself) diverting funds to any of my pet projects.

      • First: It is understandable if you are diverting funds to a pet project. This makes it sound like an expensive hobby
      • Second: Be clear on what it is you are pursuing: is it a hobby or a business?
      • Third: If it is a business, then see it as investing funds, rather than diverting funds

  • MBFH056: How Residual Income Passive Income or Linear Income Determines Your Business Success with Jason Kokenzie and Kingsley Grant

✅ In this episode, you'll discover how How Residual Income, Passive Income, or Linear Income Determines Your Business Success

Here's a Summary of the topics discussed:

    ➡️ Legacy

    • A legacy business is one that can be passed onto future generations. It is something that impacts children/family now.
    • Modeling for children so they too can do the same.
    • Our recent family 7-month road trip is one of the ways of building a legacy

➡️ Out of the box thinking:

    • Having gone to school and achieved graduate level diplomas but then realized he was not wired that way.
    • Reading Robert Kawasaki's book: "Why A Students Work for C Students" was a paradigm shifter.
    • Being unemployable
    • Always thinking things could be done another way

➡️ Managing fear or nervousness when starting a business

    • being nervous is normal to big decision making moments.
    • if you don't experience some form of nervousness, the decision may not be big enough or may not matter that much.

➡️ 3 major forms of income:

    1. Linear income - you go to work, you get money; trading time for money
    2. Passive income - continuously doing a lot of little things but getting paid over and over again.
    3. Residual income - If you work a whole lot of residual income; it requires a system. Without a system, it will die out.

There's a sweet spot in life where we can begin to build residual income. It is at the intersection of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. This is where things start changing.

    ➡️ On 9-5 work:

    • Your job gives you just enough money to live but not enough money to be comfortable.
    • The 9-5 world is not the place to be if you want to have true financial freedom.

    ➡️ On making the transition

    • understand where you are going and what you are doing
    • for a side hustle to be truly a legacy, you have to develop a system
    • find a mentor that can help you in the business … develop a system and help you with personal growth
    • there's a lot of personal growth that needs to happen.

    ➡️ On working from home

    • have systems in place that everyone understands
    • it's important to have a supportive wife

"when you start to make money and take care of the family, your spouse will jump on real soon. A happy wife a happy life."

    ➡️ Getting Spouse on board

    • As men, we don't communicate very well. We are called to dwell with us according to knowledge. Not push things on them.
    • Help them with our goal, vision and why do we want to do this...we get it and sometimes they don't
    • Walk through your "why" focusing mostly on how they'll benefit such as in spending more time with family.

    Why do people give up?

    4 Reasons why:

    ➡️ Reason #1: Experiencing Delay

➡️ Reason #3: Experiencing  Dead ends
