Publisher's Summary:
It's been one year and one day that my dad and I have been on the run, and I don't believe that we'll be slowing down any time soon.
It was one year and a day ago that I last saw my mother, and the hope of seeing her again is one of the few things that keeps us going.
It was a year and a day ago that the great orcs of Narkisim appeared, jumping right out of the stories that old nannies used to tell the children to frighten them. Nobody thought they were real anymore, and everyone assumed that they had just been made up like the boogeyman or the monsters that live under your bed.
But they were real.
In my short 12 years of life I have never faced such a grim reality, but now I realize that my dad and I may not escape this ordeal alive. That is why I have taken the opportunity to write this, in hopes that if we do perish before I find my mother and we escape, that someday someone will know what happened here. That is if the orcs don't find this book first and use it for toilet paper.
Did I mention that I just found out my dad is a wizard?

Enchanting Story of Magic as Told Through a Boy's Eyes
This a delightful read that flows easily, and can appeal to both children and adult readers alike. I loved the magical concepts introduced here; the wizards are not all-powerful, but rather learn, and when they do perform magic, it is not always reliable. For example, "teleportation sickness" can endure indefinitely; it means the wizard is subject to finding himself teleporting unexpectedly to random locations, and some experienced wizards grin and bear with it, controlling where they may go, but not when.
There is a light mood throughout the book that serves it very well. I liked the parts where the family's treasured donkey even gets his own point of view. Throughout it all, there is a sense of curiosity and wonder, through a boy's eyes. My favourite part was when the boy, Benjamin, ends up at the wizards' hiding place and befriends an older girl who has quite a bit of magic of her own, and as well, they meet other elderly wizards who are all eccentric and laid-back.
The only two suggestions I have for this book are: the backdrop of the orcs invading the countryside is lightly mentioned, but left me with a feeling of desolation for the boy's civilization, even if the boy manages to escape the chokehold not only physically but also mentally, with his distractions of awesome magic. It would have been nice to hear of the humans having some hope; perhaps they have walled cities that are struggling to barricade against the orcs, but are holding out fine. Or some countrysides are left alone; there are not nearly so many orcs roaming about. Secondly, the ending seemed a little abrupt and could have tied in everything that happened throughout the book more neatly and sauntered more slowly to the satisfying conclusion.
Nevertheless, this book gets five stars for its infectious spirit and sense of wonder. Great sense of humour and inventions of magic. Everyone is portrayed as an interesting character, even the donkey!
Loved the originally of the story
My Dad is a Wizard is about a young boy, Ben, who finds out his dad is a wizard after his family's farm is attacked by orcs and his mom disappears. From there we follow Ben and his dad's journey to find his mom.
I ended up really liking the story.
