preface a practical religion this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org practical religion by jc rile preface the volume now in the reader's hands is intended to be a companion to two other volumes which i have already published entitled knots untied and old paths knots untied consists of a connected series of papers systematically arranged about the principal points which form the subject of controversy among churchmen in the present day all who take interest in such disputed questions as the nature of the church the ministry baptism regeneration the lord's supper the real presence worship confession and the sabbath will find them pretty fully discussed in knots untied old paths consists of a similar series of papers about those leading doctrines of the gospel which are generally considered necessary to salvation the inspiration of scripture sin justification forgiveness repentance conversion faith the work of christ and the work of the holy spirit are the principle subjects handled in old paths the present volume contains a series of papers about practical religion and treats of the daily duties dangers experiences and privileges of all who profess and call themselves true christians read in conjunction with another work i have previously put out called holiness i think it will throw some light on what every believer ought to be to do and expect one common feature will be found in all the three volumes i avow it frankly at the outset and will not keep it back for a moment the standpoint i have tried to occupy from first to last is that of an evangelical churchman i say this deliberately and emphatically i am fully aware that evangelical churchmanship is not popular and acceptable in this day it is despised by many and has no form or comeliness in their eyes to avow attachment to evangelical views in some quarters is to provoke a sneer and to bring on yourself the reproach of being an unlearned and ignorant man but none of these things move me i am not ashamed of my opinions after 40 years of bible reading and praying meditation and theological study i find myself clinging more tightly than ever to evangelical religion and more than ever satisfied with it it wears well it stands the fire i know no system of religion which is better in the faith of it i have lived for the third of a century and in the faith of it i hope to die the plain truth is i see no other ground to occupy and find no other rest for the soul of my foot i lay no claim to infallibility and desire to be no man's judge but the longer i live and read the more i am convinced and persuaded that evangelical principles are the principles of the bible of the articles and prayer book and of the leading divines of the reformed church of england holding these views i cannot write otherwise than i have written i now send forth this volume with an earnest prayer that god the holy ghost may bless it and make it useful and helpful to many souls j.c rile end of preface

little folded hands by anonymous section 1 morning prayers now i awake and see the light lord thou hast kept me through the night to thee i lift my voice and pray that thou wilt keep me through the day if i should die before it is done o god accept me through thy son amen

the morning bright with rosy light has waked me from my sleep father i own thy love alone thy little one doth keep all through the day i humbly pray be thou my god and guide my sins forgive and let me live blessed jesus near thy side amen

now i raise me up from sleep i thank the lord who did me keep all through the night and to him pray that he may keep me through the day all which for jesus sake i say amen

oh help me lord this day to be thy own dear child and follow thee and lead me savior by thy hand until i reach the heavenly land amen

o lord my god to thee pray while from my bed i rise that all i do and all i say be pleasing to thine eyes amen

jesus lord to thee i pray guide and guard me through this day as the shepherd tends his sheep lord me safe from evil keep keep my feet from every snare keep me with thy watchful care all my little wants supply if i live or if i die and when life o lord is past take me to thyself at last amen

in the early morning with the sun's first rays all god's little children thank and pray and praise i too thanks would offer jesus shepherd deer for thy tender pasture for thy guiding care and i would implore thee be with me this day lest i from thee wander into danger stray amen

this new morning with its light for rest and shelter of the night for health and food for love and friends for everything thy goodness sends we thank thee dearest lord amen

i thank thee lord for sleep and rest for all the things that i love best now guide me through another day and bless my work and bless my play lord make me strong for noble ends protect and bless my loving friends of all mankind good christians make all this i ask for jesus sake amen

jesus gentle shepherd bless thy lamb today keep me in thy footsteps never let me stray guard me through the daytime every hour i pray keep my feet from straying from the narrow way amen

keep my little tongue today keep it gentle while i play keep my hands from doing wrong keep my feet the whole day long keep me all o jesus mild keep me ever thy dear child amen

jesus keep me all this day when it's school and when it play may i do all things i ought may i hate each evil thought help me love and trust in thee now and through eternity amen

chapter 1 by periods god created that which produced the solar systems then that which produced the earth but the earth was unorganized and empty and darkness covered its convulsed surface while the breath of god rocked the surface of its waters god then said let there be light and light came and god gazed upon that beautiful light and god divided the light from the darkness and to the light god gave the name of day and to the darkness he gave the name of night this was the close and the dawn of the first age god also said let there be an expanse between the waters and let it be a division between the waters and the waters and god made the expanse and it divided the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse and that was done and god named thee expanse the heavens this was the close and the dawn of the second age god then commanded let the waters below the heavens be collected in one place and let dry land appear and that was done and god named the dry land earth and the accumulated waters he named seas and god admired their beauty god then said let the earth produce seed bearing vegetation as well as fruit trees according to their several species capable of reproduction upon the earth and that was done the earth produced the seed-bearing herbage according to every species as well as the different species of reproductive fruit trees and gods saw that they were good this was the close and the dawn of the third age god further said let reflectors appear in the expanse of the heavens for a division between the day and the night and let them serve to mark seasons periods and years and let them also illuminate the expanse of the skies so as to reflect their light upon the earth and that was done god had made two large luminaries the larger one to control the day and the smaller one to control the night accompanied by the stars and god had fixed them in the heavenly expanse so as to illuminate the earth to control the day and to control the night and to mark the division between the light and the darkness and god saw they were beautiful this was the close and the dawn of the fourth age god then said let the waters be swarming with animal life and let birds fly in the expanse of the skies above the earth god accordingly produced the monsters of the deep and the waters swarmed with every species of reptile and also produced every species of flying bird and god admired their beauty and god in giving them his blessing said be fruitful and multiply so as to fill the waters of the deep and also let the birds multiply upon the earth this was the close and the dawn of the fifth age god then said let the earth produce animal life according to its species in quadrupeds reptiles and all wild animals answering to their species and that was done god accordingly made the various species of the animals of the earth as well as the several species of quadrupeds and all the different species of reptiles and god admired their beauty god then said let us make men under our shadow as our representatives and subject to them the fish of the waters and the birds of the sky and the quadrupeds as well as the whole of the earth and every reptile that creeps upon it so god created men under his own shadow creating them in the shadow of god and constituting them male and female god then gave them his blessing and god said to them be fruitful and multiply so as to fill the earth and subdue it and rule over the fish of...

we shall now perhaps be able to understand the relation of the lord himself to the baptism of john he came to john to be baptized and most would say john's baptism was of repentance for the remission or pardon of sins but the lord could not be baptized for the remission of sins for he had never done a selfish and untrue or an unfair thing he had never wronged his father any more than ever his father had wronged him happy happy son and father who had never either done the other wrong in thought word or deed as little had he wronged brother or sister he needed no forgiveness there was nothing to forgive no more could he be baptized for repentance in him repentance would have been to turn to evil where then was the propriety of his coming to be baptized by john and insisting on being by him baptized it must lie elsewhere if we take the words of john to mean the baptism of repentance unto the sending away of sins and if we bear in mind that in his case repentance could not be in as much as what repentance is necessary to bring about in man was already existent in jesus then altering the words to fit the case and saying the baptism of willed devotion to the sending away of sin we shall see at once how the baptism of jesus was a thing right and fit that he had no sin to repent of was not because he was so constituted that he could not sin if he would it was because of his own will and judgment he sent sin away from him sent it from him with the full choice and energy of his nature god knows good and evil and blessed be his name chooses good never will his righteous anger make him unfair to us make him forget that we are dust like him his son also chose good and in that choice resisted all temptation to help his fellows otherwise than as their and his father would instead of crushing the power of evil by divine force instead of compelling justice and destroying the wicked instead of making peace on the earth by the rule of a perfect prince instead of gathering the children of jerusalem under his wings whether they would or not and saving them from the horrors that anguished his prophetic soul he let evil work its will while it lived he contented himself with the slow unencouraging ways of help essential making men good casting out not merely controlling satan carrying to their perfect issue on earth the old primeval principles because of which the father honored him thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity therefore god even thy god hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows

to love righteousness is to make it grow not to avenge it and to win for righteousness the true victory he as well as his brethren had to send away evil throughout his life on earth he resisted every impulse to work more rapidly for a lower good strong perhaps when he saw old age and innocence and righteousness trodden underfoot what but this gives any worth of reality to the temptation in the wilderness to the devils departing from him for a season to his coming again to experience a like failure ever and ever in the whole attitude of his being in his heart always lifted up in his unfailing readiness to pull with the father's yoke he was repelling driving away sin away from himself and as lord of men and their savior away from others also bringing them to abdurat like himself no man least of all any lord of men can be good without willing to be good without setting himself against evil without sending away sin other men have to send it away out of them the lord had to send it away from before him that it should not enter into him therefore is the stand against sin common to the captain of salvation and the soldiers under him what did jesus come into the world to do the will of god in saving his people from their sins not...
