In this episode of My Feel Good F’n Courses Podcast, we’ll tackle a topic that many of us grapple with but seldom discuss: financial unworthiness. This episode is a deep dive into understanding the roots of financial unworthiness, how it manifests in our lives, and actionable steps to overcome it.
Financial unworthiness is that nagging feeling that you don't deserve financial success, that you're not good enough to have money, or that if you do have it, you're somehow taking it away from someone more deserving. We’ll explain how this sense of unworthiness can be a silent barrier that holds us back from achieving our financial goals.
So, where does this feeling come from? The roots of financial unworthiness often stem from childhood experiences, societal messages, or even cultural beliefs. If you grew up in a household where money was tight, you might have internalised the belief that money is hard to come by or that you're not meant to have it. On the other hand, if you grew up in a wealthy family but felt like you didn't earn that wealth, you might feel guilty or undeserving of it.
Messages from social media also play a significant role in shaping our beliefs about money. We are constantly bombarded with images of what success looks like, and it's often tied to material wealth. When we don't fit that image, it's easy to feel like we don't measure up.
We’ll offer several actionable steps to overcome these feelings of unworthiness. It starts with awareness. Recognise the thoughts and beliefs you have about money and ask yourself where they come from. Are they truly your beliefs, or are they inherited from your upbringing, society, or culture?
Next, challenge those beliefs. Just because you've always thought a certain way doesn't mean it's true. For example, if you believe that you're not worthy of financial success, ask yourself why. What evidence do you have to support that belief? And more importantly, what evidence do you have that contradicts it?
Reframing your thoughts is another powerful tool. Instead of thinking "I'm not worthy of wealth," try thinking "I'm capable of creating and managing wealth." Instead of "I don't deserve to be paid more," think "My skills and time are valuable, and I deserve fair compensation."
Taking action is crucial. Set financial goals that reflect your true desires, not what you think you deserve. Surround yourself with people who support your financial growth and seek out resources that help you build your financial knowledge and confidence. Seek financial help from a professional if needed.
Remember, your worth is not determined by your bank balance. Financial success is not about deserving or not deserving. It's about believing in your ability to create the financial life you want and taking the steps to make it happen.
