Her Power

My Mom: The Windrush Generation Immigrant

Listen Later

In this episode, I speak to my Mom.  She is a Windrush Generation Immigrant who came to this country when she was just 6 years old in the early 1960s.  Sadly my Mom's Mom passed away in childbirth when my Mom was only 8 just a couple of years after arriving in this country.  This Mothers Day Special is dedicated to my Mom.

We discussed:

  • Embracing her natural hair journey and her previous hair fails.
  • Arriving in this country as a young immigrant and her memories of coming to England.
  • How not having a Mom around impacted her relationship with her hair.
  • Uncomfortable looks.
  • And what it's like being about being a Mom to two Mixed-race kids.

The Curl Squad represents all things community, conversation, confidence and curls. We discuss growing up curly, overcoming obstacles, traumas and triumphs as well as sharing a natural hair care essential or two.
