Becoming You

My Personal Spiritual Practices

Listen Later

In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I talk about the spiritual practices I personally go back to time and time again in order to center and connect to myself.

Practice #1: Meditation

This was my gateway into true spirituality. Once I discovered how to meditate and really commit to the practice of meditation, I was able to tap into a part of myself that I didn’t even know existed.

A mentor of mine beautifully told me that “practice means you’re going to be making mistakes.” There is no destination when it comes to practice, and so we need to let go of the pressure of having to “get it right”.

Practice #2: Visualization

While meditation is the practice of observing the mind in stillness and silence, visualization is the practice of living in a reality that you most desire.

Practice #3: Scripting or Journaling

I admit, this one is a bit of a challenge for me. There are times when I just get into the flow and can’t stop writing down the endless thoughts and feelings I’m having in the moment; but, then there are other days when picking up a pen is the last thing I want to do.

That’s probably because a lot of the steam dissipated after I was able to really define my identity and purpose in those early days of journaling. Nowadays, I journal sporadically, usually when inspiration hits me, but nowhere near as regularly as I did in the beginning.

On the other hand, I have a mentor that hasn’t missed a journaling session in about four years. This made me realize that each person has their own set of spiritual practices that aligns with their unique journey.

Don’t feel bad if you just can’t seem to commit consistently to one particular practice. Find what works best for you and go all-in on it.

Practice #4: Breathwork

As with journaling, my breathwork sessions are pretty sporadic as well. But breathwork has allowed me to connect to my body on a really deep level.

I didn’t realize just how disconnected I was from my body—how difficult it was for me to locate points of pain and sources of strong emotions.

Our bodies hold so much trauma, and that energy builds up over the years. The only way to move that stuff out and write a new story for ourselves is to really feel whatever emotion is tied to the shame, the guilt, and the memory of that unproductive story.

Breathwork is the key to unlocking your ability to feel things on a truly substantial level. And it is “work”. But whenever that work pays off, the catharsis is often so profound that I just find myself going back to breathwork time and time again.

Practice #5: Movement

This can be in the form of exercise or dance.

How can movement be a spiritual practice? As much as we talk about mindset on this podcast, remember that your body is your vehicle for actually living life.

The key is to strengthen your mind, body, and soul with equal attention given to each.

Practice #6: Connecting to Nature

I can’t adequately express just how much Nature soothes my soul, from trees, to oceans, to lakes.

The beauty of Mother Earth never fails to bring me to tears. That’s right: I’ve become a teary-eyed tree-hugger.

When I connect to Nature, I connect to myself. After all, we are Nature, whether we recognize it or not.
