It's not rocket science:  needing a rescue is the only qualification required for being rescued.  I can't tell you how often I have to keep coming back to this truth, that Jesus alone saves me and not my being good enough to deserve him.  These  passages help me believe it:  Exodus 10-11, Matthew 19, Psalm 24, and Proverbs 6:1-5.

A desire for greatness is hardwired in everybody.  Jesus didn't say not to want it.  He simply turned what greatness is and where to find it upside down, which is what I learned from Exodus 6-7, Matthew 18:1-10, Psalm 22:25-31, and Proverbs 5:15-20.
