Years ago, a women’s book group read “The Beardstown Ladies Common Sense Investing Guide” and decided they would like to duplicate their success.  They were a group of 13 women, hence the name Baker’s Dozen.  The club celebrated its 25th Anniversary as a BetterInvesting Investment Club in 2020.

Since then, club size has ebbed and flowed as people left and others joined the club.  Happily, there are still two founding partners active in Baker’s Dozen.  During the past few years, the club has opened our meetings to visitors so they may learn more about investing and investment clubs.  As a result, several new partners joined the club and reinvigorate our learning and stock discussions.

Our backgrounds are varied as our members are small business owners, teachers and educators, automotive engineers, State Government Accountant, nurse, and a CEO.  Some of us are still working, while others are retired. At Baker’s Dozen, we strive to learn more about investing and aim to have fun while doing so

Ann Newman grew up in a middle-class family. Her Dad was an officer in the Air Force and her mom never worked. She is the Youngest of 3 kids. She remembers seeing her dad keep his detailed stock notes & she knew he made money that way, too. She was always somewhat interested but did not really know anything about it.

Her parents were frugal, but she always had everything she needed. They put her through Emory University after high school. Her first long term job was Walt Disney World in 1971-1973. She became an Army wife, had 2 kids, traveled, and got her master’s degree while stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. She also lived in Germany and began working full time again in 1987 when they returned.

She had investment advisors and listened to them, but she was developing her own philosophy, too. She heard about an investment club in 2000 when she was taking a sabbatical from teaching and joined as soon as possible. The first convention was a Computes in Atlanta in 2005. She retired from school teaching in 2011 & was asked to help put the Georgia chapter together.

She was the first board President (3 yr. term). She has stayed active on the board until this year.

During his high school years, Terrance began writing scripts and being involved in theater production. He leveraged his knowledge of production to build digital media content for artists during his first couple of years away from home. This led to a chance encounter to join EA Sports.

He rose through the ranks of the gaming industry over the next 15 years. From testing games, designing games, and producing games West continued to pursue his dreams even with all of the adversity he faced over the years.

His passion extends outside of gaming to professional and cultural development. He has certifications for the product owner, product management, digital leadership, business strategy as well as diversity and inclusion management.

Of his several projects, he says changing the culture is his life long project. “Our equity as a culture cannot be denied. We have inherited systemic inequality that has continued to paralyze our growth as a culture,” says West. “We have to break our generational curses. That is my goal every day.”

Every two years the Wynn family members come together for a Christmas gathering and in 1999 the idea was discussed to create a family investment club. Robert Wynn suggested the family form the club to teach the children and one day grandchildren about investing and how to build wealth. While members of the Wynn family are in different states and time zones the family investment club has sustained because of commitment and fiscal responsibility. The members meet by conference call on a monthly basis to review stocks using Better Investing tools such as the SSG. By taking the slow and steady path to investing the REHL Wynn Family Investment Club has reached the $100,000 mark and continues to climb. The club has grown since its inception with grandchildren as investment club partners. Family members find the investment club meetings an opportunity to connect each month as a family while also growing wealth.

Bobbie was born in Texas and came to Illinois as a young child with her parents. She attended Midstate College in Peoria, IL and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. She has taught high school business courses is also a  retired Customer Account Manager in Hemophilia Dept for Accredo/Medco/Express Scripts.

Bobbie has been married to her high school sweetheart, Paul, for 58 years. They have two grown children – Jon (Gina) and Shelley (Bill). Shelley is a stay-at-home Mom and Bill is an Anesthesiologist . Bonnie is a grandmother to eight.

Besides investing she likes  singing, church involvement, photography, gourmet cooking, gardening, traveling, genealogy, card making, and Sudoku.

Christian Posada is based in Lake Worth, Florida and graduated from the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) with a bachelor's in Accounting, and continued his education receiving a Master's Degree in Business and a Law Degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). Christian Posada has many years of diverse experience in business, insurance, law and finance.

Looking to the future, Mr. Posada shows no signs of resting on his laurels as he aims to continue to learn and invest in the stock market as he enjoys learning and investing in stocks in an effort to leave a nest egg for his family especially his daughters.

Mr. Posada is a native of Florida and with his wife, Tammy Baxter Posada. Mr. Posada has two (2) young twin daughters Alexa Posada and Olivia Posada. Mr. Posada enjoys exercising and time relaxing with his family. Mr. Posada also enjoys volunteering his time as he is active in multiple organizations in the community.

Damon A. Williams is a movement builder, organizer, hip-hop performing artist, educator, and media maker from the south side of Chicago. He is the co-director of the #LetUsBreathe Collective, an artistic activist organization birthed out of supply trips to support the Ferguson uprising in resistance to the murder of Mike Brown.

Williams and #LetUsBreathe transplanted the experiences from the front lines and continue to organize direct actions and community enrichment events throughout the streets of Chicago and in their movement-building community center "The #BreathingRoom Space", with the mission of utilizing cultural production and popular education to redistribute power and resources, eradicate systemic violence, and transform inequity.

Damon is also the cohost of AirGo, a radio show, and podcast showcasing culture workers reshaping Chicago and beyond for the more equitable and creative.

Brooklyn New York-native Shameka Beeks, is a Licensed Master Social Worker, with 14 years of experience within the human service field as a program developer, community organizer, and outreach worker.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Administration of Justice from Howard University; a Professional Studies Certificate in Communication from New York University; and a Master of Social Work Degree from Adelphi University. As a social justice advocate, Shameka understands the importance of educational and social programs, and why people need to be connected to them.  Currently, she is employed at the nation’s largest victim assistance organization as a mental health therapist, specializing in treating PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety and borderline personality disorder in men, women, and children. She is looking forward to receiving her Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) certification in 2021.

In September 2020, Shameka became a Better Investing member.  She learned about the organization, several years ago, in a book written by Peter Lynch, the former Magellan Fund manager at Fidelity.  Through curiosity, interest, and research her dream of investing in the stock market is now a reality. Shameka Beeks is a divorced mom, and her daughter is in the fourth grade.  During downtime Shameka enjoys fellowshipping in the parent ministry at her church, taking naps, making soups, and watching throwback movies with her daughter.

Chastain has had two main careers: a Communications Technician in the U.S. Navy and at The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, and as an attorney with the State of California. He has been married to Vicky for 40 years and they have one daughter. He retired from the state in November 2007. Roy was raised by his depression-era dad who believed “Stocks aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.” So, he learned that a savings account was important. That changed in 1992 when 12 friends from church formed the Greenhaven Investment Club. Besides learning to do SSGs by hand, and learning from instructors with the Sacramento Area Chapter, he learned the BetterInvesting (NAIC at that time) philosophy from Ellis Traub. The most recent gurus have been Carol Theine and Doug Gerlach, along with many others. He eventually joined the Chapter Board of Directors and in 2014 joined the ICLUBcentral Board of Directors and the BetterInvesting Financial and Audit Committee. He has also performed Club Visits and made presentations to city libraries and Presbyterian Women on Financial Literacy for Women and Families, as well as being a presenter on some webinars, and now work the back room for StockUp and TickerTalk programs.
