The Jewish confession of faithĀ
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, AdonaiĀ Echad!Ā āHear, O Israel! TheĀ LordĀ our God, theĀ LordĀ is one!āĀ
Ā
This is known as theĀ ShemaĀ āĀ the most central prayer in Judaism.Ā ItĀ is considered theĀ mainĀ confession of Jewish faith.Ā As such itĀ is different to our Christian confessions,Ā which usually areĀ expressed in multipleĀ series ofĀ declarations:Ā āWeĀ believe, ā¦ā The Jewish confession,Ā however,Ā is not so much a āwe believeāĀ statement but aĀ divine command to hear,Ā toĀ listen toĀ the voice of God regarding whoĀ He isĀ āĀ the one true God. The Shema has such aĀ sanctified status,Ā that for manyĀ rabbis the short phrase āShemaĀ Yisraelā is equal to the very name of God, many times just symbolized with the Hebrew letter ש [shin].Ā
