The Gadarenes by asking Christ to leave, showed fear in the face of such overwhelming power over the Devil and nature itself. 

There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle... Spiritual proogress entails the asceticism and mortification that gradually lead to living in the peace and joy of the Beatitudes. CCC

Discipleship means following Christ unconditionally with all of the sacrifice it may entail
