"Letter from a Birmingham Jail [King, Jr.]"16 April 1963
My Dear Fellow Clergymen:
While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here.But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self purification; and direct action. We have gone through all these steps in Birmingham. There can be no gainsaying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community. Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation. These are the hard, brutal facts of the case. In this weeks show Journalist David Josef Volodzko returns. The controversial author had an exchange with Genocide expert Omer Bartov. Dr. Bartov wrote an article in The Guardian arguing The State of Israel is guilty of genocide. Volodzko responding to the accusation of Genocide is presented after reading Omer Bartov essay in this episode. His email response to Bartov is below:

“Mr. Bartov, I read your moving essay in The Guardian this morning. It is maybe one of the more powerful essays I have read of this nature since Oct 7. I do not see the case for genocide, but I do feel it is important to humanize both sides of this conflict, as you have done. I wish there was more writing like this out there. I am surprised that you wrote of the "utter inability of Israeli society today to feel any empathy..." I would argue for the removal of "utter" and "any" and I have seen videos of Israelis being interviewed and, even after Oct 7, expressing compassion for the people of Gaza. Perhaps you have also seen such videos. I have also spoken to my Israeli friends. Only the most extreme far-right have literally zero compassion for the Gazans. But this is a minor point in an overall impressive call for rachamin.”He replied, but only to thank me for my message. He did not actually engage any of my points. Frankly, I find his argument absurd. In the video you sent, he claims that Israel is guilty of genocide because Gazans have no place left to run.

This ignores the geopolitical and military realities of this war. And I do not care that Bartov is widely regarded as a genocide expert. He has that reputation because he is a historian of the Holocaust. That does not give him expertise in assessing all types of genocide or all types of military conflict. And despite my respect for his humanity and compassion, and his staggeringly impressive historical work on the Holocaust, I personally think his understanding of genocide, or applkication of that understanding to this specific conflict, is stunningly ignorant.

No act of violence is genocidal unless it has genocidal intent. Period. You can kill only five people and it can be genocidal violence. You can kill 100,000 and it may not be genocidal whatsoever. Genocide must have the intention of erasing an ethnic group, or attempting to do so. Bartov is instead using Ibram X. Kendi's definition of racism, adapted to the concept of genocide. Namely, that if the results mirror the results you would get from racism, then it is racism. Or, if you see many people being trapped and killed as you would expect to see in a true genocide, then it is genocide.

This is asinine. Again, genocide is the attempt to kill off an entire ethnic group. Hence genos- + -cide. So if someone wants to claim that Israel intends to kill all Palestinians, they are first going to have to explain why 20% of Israel is Palestinian. It's a pretty fucking weird form of genocide that gives citizenship and social welfare benefits to the ethnic group you are trying to wipe out of existence, or allows them into your own government, and even collects terrorists of that ethnicity who have slaughtered your own children — and treats them, saving their lives, even the lives of their masterminds, in your own hospitals."

Volodzko also shared this with our program:

...For instance, the daughter of the October 7 architect Ismail Haniyeh was saved at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital in 2014. His mother-in-law received treatment in Jerusalem that same year. And his granddaughter. And his sister's grandson — after October 7. That's right, after the largest pogrom of Jews since the Holocaust, Israelis gave medical treatment to the grandniece of the man responsible for the horror. They slaughter our children and we save theirs. "Genocide."

In this week’s show we feature Grace Kohn author of Children of Autumn-Autism Here on Purpose. She returns to share her experience with the recent fire and devastation of her home town of Jasper, Alberta, Canada. 

During the fire she lost The Jule House a small and mighty space, where Julianne Shea (her daughter), born with debilitating autism, shared a modest home as an adult with people dedicated to independent living. This is an incredible accomplishment based on years of hard work by Julianne and her community. Most homes on Lodgepole tragically burned to the ground, including Grace's small home right next door. A double tragedy for her family.

We discuss how the Canadian insurance companies will not cover the full replacement costs and the impact this challenge has on their community.

In this week’s show our guest is David Josef Volodzko who was fired from The Seattle Times after he criticized Lenin in comparison to Hitler.
