Much of the history we in the English speaking world have of World War II focuses on the campaigns in Russia, Messerschmitts dogfighting with Spitfires over London, and the massive island campaigns in the Pacific between the Japanese and Americans. But one of the two founding members of the Axis Powers, Italy, receives much less attention, as its involvement does not neatly fit into the narrative of the world war, having begun operations as a fascist state in the 1920s and leaving the war early in 1943. The post-armistice period, however, was arguably the most difficult for Italy, as the civil war that broke out between the fascists, communists, and ordinary people took a tremendous toll on the social fabric of Italian families, and over 1 million men who were forcibly taken to Germany to work in their war factories. Piero San Giorgio, grandson of one of these men, joins us tonight to tell his story.

The modern world is an integrated system of almost unfathomable complexity, built upon sub systems, technologies, people and practices that if partially removed or neglected sufficiently, result in disastrous supply chain break downs as witnessed in wartime or as the world seized up in response to an over-hyped flu virus in 2020. One of the industries at the heart of the manufacturing economy is the machine tool industry, responsible for “building the machines that build the machines” – mills, lathes, planers, presses, etc. that produce the metal products such as cars, airplanes and household appliances. Without these industrial tools, production would be relegated to hand tools or worse, and for national security reasons is arguably a strategic industry to be protected. As with most things in modern America, however, what is sensible and what is reality is at odds, with the machine tool industry witnessing a global market share decline of number one in the world at around 20% in 1981 to less than 5% today.

In the summer of 1975, two FBI agents were shot and killed after pursuing a vehicle onto private property near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This had come after several tense years of strife on the reservation, including the armed Wounded Knee standoff where the FBI encircled for 71 days members of the American Indian Movement who were protesting the corruption of the US-government friendly tribal leader’s administration. Although two of the AIM members put on trial for the FBI agents’ murder were acquitted, the third, Leonard Peltier, is still serving two consecutive life sentences in federal penitentiary despite lack of evidence of his guilt and intimidation and false witness made by the prosecution.

Japan is a country with a deep history of self reliance, demonstrating time and again that for a small island nation lacking in natural resources, they can not only hold their own, but come to dominate militarily, economically, and culturally. By the 1980s, Japan’s prowess in the economy had become apparent, with the manufacturing sector commanding global automotive and electronics markets, and the acquisition of large quantities of foreign assets in real estate, production facilities and government debt. Something changed catastrophically, however, in the 1990s, and Japan’s decades long boom came to an undeniable halt. At the center of it all, contends economist Richard Werner, was the Bank of Japan, and its restructuring of the economy towards a more speculative and consumer driven one via the intentional imposition of a financial crisis.

In the not too distant future, New York has been walled off, isolating the once great city and turning it into an open air prison camp. The United States, still a military and technological force, is struggling however economically and socially, not to mention politically as its superpower status is challenged by China and Russia. Released in 1981, the plot to John Carpenter’s ‘Escape from New York’ could very well be set today in any of America’s newly burned out cities after months of BLM and Antifa rioting, who sing similar themes as the hijackers in the movie who kidnap the President. With the 2020 Election being still disputed, the country itself appears in need a Snake character to either rescue itself from a hijacking of a different sort, or to wake it up to the cold reality that things really are that bad, defying all attempts at logic or reason.
