This calm retelling follows the Orcadian selkie-wife tradition recorded by Walter Traill Dennison in the nineteenth century. A man known in the tale as the Good Man of Wastness finds selkie folk ashore and takes one woman’s skin, leaving her unable to return to the water. Years pass in a human household, with children growing around a secret that cannot remain hidden forever.
The story then turns to Shetland and the seven-stanza ballad recorded in 1852 and later preserved by Francis James Child as “The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry.” A mother caring for her child receives a visitor who says he is a man on land and a silkie in the sea.
Through these quiet and melancholy traditions, this episode considers family, freedom, the sea, and the difficult border between the places where a life is lived and the places that still call it home. The account remains close to surviving folklore and distinguishes recorded tradition from literal historical evidence.

In Hesiod’s Works and Days, it was a pithos, a large storage jar, and Pandora opened it after Zeus had already set a divine punishment in motion. This episode retells the myth from the decisive moment when the lid lifts and suffering enters mortal life, then traces the older story backward to Prometheus’s theft of fire, Zeus’s anger, and the creation of Pandora by Hephaestus, Athena, Aphrodite, Hermes, and the other gods.
