  • [Heruitsending] Hettie Brittz: 'Kweek Kinders Met Karakter'/ [Rebroadcast] Hettie Brittz: 'Growing Kids with Character'
Since Hettie Brittz's parenting book 'Growing Kids with Character' was first published in 2007, thousands of copies have been sold and have become part of many South African families' journey of raising children.
Hettie, a mom of 3 (and now also a grandmother of 1!), has now updated the book, and a new version is available. In it, she teaches that you really need to know your child in order to handle him or her correctly - and that also means knowing yourself, both strengths and weaknesses. In this interview, Daniëlla and Hettie discuss all the new challenges that today's parents must face, Hettie's own challenges as a young mother, what she has learned since then, and about the family's new life in America. Hettie also gives advice to other South African moms living abroad.

  • [Heruitsending] Vakansietyd = Skermtyd: Wat 'n Arbeidsterapeut Wil Hê Jy Moet Weet/[Rebroadcast] Holiday Time = Screen Time: What an Occupational Therapist Wants You to Know
While 'n Ma & 'n Mikrofoon takes a production break to work on new content, we’re sharing some of our most popular episodes again.
Screen time is almost inevitable in the lives of toddlers, children, and teenagers—especially during the holidays. While most parents rely on it occasionally to "get things done," it often comes with feelings of guilt. In this episode, we aim to establish guidelines for balanced screen time.
Occupational therapist Carla Grobler highlights the warning signs that can help you determine whether your child’s screen time is negatively affecting them. She also shares advice on how to address the issue. We explore different types of screen time and their impact, focusing on alternatives—how to replace screen time with play.
Through the conversation, we aim to develop practical plans for families to use screens without sacrificing quality time together.

Mari Botha’s daughter, Ruaché, weighed just 440 grams when she was born at 25 weeks.

In this episode, Mari shares with Daniëlla the lessons she's learned as a preemie mom, offers heartfelt advice for other parents with children in the NICU, and reflects on the challenging path they traveled before, during, and after their months in the hospital.

  • Nageboorte Depressie: Die eerlike gesprek wat luisteraars wou hoor / Postpartum Depression: The Episode You Asked For
Nageboorte depressie. Post-partum depressie.
This episode is the result of many messages and requests from listeners of 'n Ma & 'n Mikrofoon.
Postpartum depression... It's more than just the "baby blues" – and more common than we all realize.
Despite affecting so many of us, it’s still something we are often reluctant to talk about. But in this episode, Daniëlla and clinical psychologist Gerda Kriel talk openly and without hesitation. Gerda shares her own story of postpartum depression, something she also experienced as a child when her mother suffered from it. She explains why it happens, what you can do (before, during, and after), and why it’s never too late to intervene. We also discuss how PPD affects men and fathers too, and how you can support your husband, friends, or colleagues when you recognize the signs.
