    When we see ants, they always seem to be busy.


    我們看到螞蟻的時候，牠們好像永遠都在忙。

    They look for food, carry things, take care of young ants, and move around all day.

    牠們找食物、搬東西、照顧幼蟲，而且一整天都在到處活動。

    So, you might think, “Do ants even need to sleep?”

    所以你可能會想：「螞蟻真的需要睡覺嗎？」

    Well, they do.

    答案是，牠們會。畢竟他也是螞蟻生螞蟻養，又不是天生下來就要做到死….

    And the way some ants sleep might make you a little jealous.

    而且，有些螞蟻的睡覺方式，可能會讓你有一點羨慕。

    Because they can sleep hundreds of times a day.

    They do not sleep for eight hours in one long stretch.

    Researchers have studied the sleep patterns of fire ants, especially their worker ants.

    So their daily routine might look something like this.

    Sleep for a little while. Wake up and go back to work.

    It is almost like they have hundreds of tiny naps every day.

    Did you like school lunch when you were a kid?


    你小時候喜歡吃營養午餐嗎？

    Let me be honest. I didn’t really like it.

    我先說，我沒有特別喜歡。

    It wasn’t terrible. It was just… pretty ordinary.

    不是因為它真的很難吃，只是……很普通。

    There was rice, vegetables, soup, and sometimes fruit or milk.

    有飯、有菜、有湯，有時候還有水果或牛奶。

    When I was a kid, I didn’t think much about it. Lunchtime meant eating lunch.

    小時候的我不太會想太多，中午到了就是吃飯。

    But as I got older, I started to wonder about something.

    但是長大以後，我突然很好奇一件事情。

    Where did the school lunch we ate every day actually come from?

    我們小時候每天吃的營養午餐，到底是怎麼來的？

    If we talk about the history of school lunch in Taiwan, we can start with 1951.

    如果要說台灣營養午餐的歷史，可以先從 1951 年開始。

    Taiwan was still rebuilding after the war, many families were struggling, and children’s nutrition was an important concern.

    那時候台灣還在戰後重建的階段，很多家庭的生活條件並不好，兒童營養也是受到重視的問題。

    In 1951, UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) provided skim milk powder for schools to give to students.

    1951 年，聯合國兒童基金會提供脫脂奶粉，讓學校提供給學生。

    So at first, school nutrition programs were not really the complete lunches we think of today.

    所以一開始的營養午餐，其實還不是我們今天想像的「一頓完整午餐」。

    Then, in 1957, things moved one step further.

    到了 1957 年，事情又往前走了一步。

    Taiwan started testing school lunch programs in several schools.

    台灣開始在一些學校試辦營養午餐。

    The government started thinking beyond giving children milk and began asking, “Can schools provide children with a more complete meal?”

    這時候，政府開始思考的不只是「給孩子喝牛奶」，而是能不能在學校提供一頓比較完整的飯。

    The school lunch system expanded greatly because of U.S. aid in the 1960s.

    真正讓營養午餐大幅發展的，是 1960 年代的美援。

    The United States provided Taiwan with agricultural products such as wheat, flour, skim milk powder, and cooking oil.

    當時美國提供台灣不少農產品，包括小麥、麵粉、脫脂奶粉和食用油等。

    In 1964, Taiwan launched a large-scale school lunch program for children.

    到了 1964 年，台灣正式推動大規模的學童營養午餐計畫。

    From this point on, school lunch was no longer just about nutrition. It slowly became part of everyday school life.

    從這個時候開始，營養午餐不只是「補充營養」，而是慢慢變成學校生活的一部分。

    It was also about nutrition education, hygiene, and eating habits, not just filling children’s stomachs.

    而且它也不只是讓孩子吃飽，還包含營養教育、衛生和飲食習慣。

    But the system did not depend on American aid forever.

    不過，這套制度並不是一直靠美國的援助。

    In 1969, the U.S.-supported school lunch program ended.

    1969 年，美援營養午餐計畫結束。

    After that, Taiwan gradually moved toward running and funding its own school lunch programs.

    接下來，台灣開始慢慢轉向自己籌措經費、自己辦理學校午餐。

    By the 1970s, school lunch became more organized and gradually spread to more schools.

    到了 1970 年代，營養午餐開始更加制度化，也逐漸在更多學校普及。

    And then, it became a part of everyone's childhood.

    然後，它就一路走進了大家的童年。

    It’s that such an ordinary meal was connected to postwar Taiwan, international aid, government policy, and changes in Taiwanese eating habits.

    而是這麼普通的一餐，竟然跟戰後台灣、國際援助、政府政策，還有台灣飲食習慣的變化都有關係。

    You’re not looking at a lunch that simply appeared one day.

    你看到的不是一頓突然出現的午餐。

    It slowly became what we know today after Taiwan went through many different periods of history.

    它其實是台灣走過很多年代之後，才慢慢變成我們熟悉的樣子。

    And if you ask me whether I miss school lunch now?

    至於你問我，我現在會不會懷念營養午餐？

    Well…嗯……Not really. 還是不太會。

      Have you ever noticed that operating rooms are often green?


      你有沒有注意過，開刀房好像常常都是綠色的？

      The walls may be green, the doctors’ clothes may be green, and even the sheets may be green or blue.

      牆壁可能是綠色的，醫師穿的衣服可能是綠色的，甚至手術時使用的布也可能是綠色或藍色的。

      I used to think it was just because green looked clean and calm.

      以前我還以為，只是因為綠色看起來很乾淨、很讓人冷靜。

      But actually, there is a much more practical reason.

      但其實，它背後有一個更實際的原因。

      This matter has a lot to do with our eyes.

      這件事情跟我們的眼睛很有關係。

      Think about what a surgeon has to look at during an operation.

      想想看，外科醫師在手術的時候，要一直看著什麼。

      They may spend several hours looking at blood and human tissue.

      他們可能要花好幾個小時，看著血液和人體組織。

      That's right, many of them are red.

      沒錯，其中有很多都是紅色的。

      Now imagine looking at red for hours.

      現在想像一下，如果你連續好幾個小時都在看紅色。

      Your eyes are going to get red.

      你的眼睛當然會發紅。

      And something interesting can happen when we stare at one color for too long.

      Our eyes can produce something called an afterimage.

      You can actually try it yourself.

      Look at something bright red for a while, and then look at a white wall.

      You may see a greenish color for a moment.

      Don’t worry. You are not seeing a ghost.

      So the green is not really there to make the room look pretty.

      Of course, not every operating room in the world is green.

      Because when we see something like a green operating room, we usually think about how it looks.

      But the real question is not, “Does it look good?”

      The real question is, “Does it work?”

      And sometimes, good design is not about looking beautiful.

      It is about making someone’s job a little easier.

      So next time you see a green operating room, you can think about it this way.

      That color is not there to look good.

      It is there to help the eyes do their job.

      For a few days recently, I was not feeling very well while recording my podcast.


      最近這幾天，我錄 Podcast 的時候，狀態一直很不好。

      I did not feel comfortable, I could not sleep well at night, and I kept getting stuck while recording.

      身體不太舒服，晚上也睡不好，錄音的時候又一直卡住。

      At first, I thought I was probably just too tired, so I rested, made some changes, and tried to find the reason.

      我本來想說，應該是太累了，所以休息、調整，也想辦法找原因。

      But after trying different things for a few days, I still felt that something was not right.

      可是試了幾天，還是覺得哪裡不太對。

      Then I thought, “Okay, I have tried everything I can, so maybe I should go see Mazu.”

      後來我想：「好，既然我能做的都做了，那我去找媽祖好了。」

      So I went to a Mazu temple, told Mazu what had been happening, and asked some questions by using divination blocks.

      所以我去了媽祖廟，把最近的狀況告訴媽祖，也透過擲筊問了一些問題。

      The answers I got made me think, “Okay, I will leave this to you.”

      當時得到的答案，讓我覺得：「好，那就交給妳了。」

      Later, I asked one more time, and the answer made me feel that the matter had been taken care of.

      後來我又問了一次，得到的答案讓我覺得這件事情已經處理好了。

      I cannot prove what really happened.

      至於到底發生了什麼，我沒有辦法證明。

      But for me at that moment, one thing was clear.

      但對當時的我來說，至少有一件事情很明確。

      I could finally let it go. 我終於可以把這件事情放下來了。

       This also reminded me of a story my friend once shared with me.

      One day, my husband went to the hospital and stayed with a client who was very close to the end of his life.

      有一次，我老公去醫院，陪一位只剩最後一口氣的客戶走完人生最後一程。

      When he came home, he continued to help take care of our baby as usual.

      回家之後，他一樣照常幫忙帶小孩。

      But that same day, our baby suddenly had a fever of almost 40 degrees Celsius.

      結果沒想到，當天寶寶突然發燒到快 40 度。

      The baby’s whole body turned purple, and the baby was shaking badly.

      寶寶全身發紫，而且一直發抖。

      We were completely panicked and did not know what to do.

      我們當下整個手忙腳亂，不知道該怎麼辦。

      We quickly filled the bathtub with warm water and gave the baby a fever-reducing suppository.

      我們趕快用溫水裝滿浴盆，也幫寶寶塞了退燒塞劑。

      We thought it might be a bad cold, an infection, or some kind of sudden inflammation.

      我們想說，是不是急性發炎、感冒，或是身體出了什麼問題。

      The next day, we immediately took the baby to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor even took an X-ray.

      隔天，我們立刻帶寶寶去醫院檢查，甚至還拍了 X 光。

      But after the examination, the doctor said that there was nothing wrong.

      但是醫生檢查完之後，卻說沒有發現什麼問題。

      The baby still looked weak and sick, though, and we felt that something was strange.

      可是寶寶看起來還是病懨懨的，我們覺得整個狀況非常奇怪。

      Then we started to wonder if our baby had been affected by something because the baby’s father had been with someone who had just passed away.

      後來我們就忍不住想到，會不會是因為爸爸前一天接觸了一位剛離開的人，所以寶寶受到了什麼影響。

       

      So we quickly took out the blessed money you had given me from a Mazu pilgrimage.

      所以我們趕快拿出你之前給我的壓轎金。

      It’s a piece of blessed money that had been placed under Mazu’s palanquin during a pilgrimage.


      We burned it and used the ashes in the baby’s bath.

      我們把它燒了之後，拿來幫寶寶洗澡。

      Strangely enough, after the bath, the baby seemed to feel much better.

      結果說也奇怪，洗完澡之後，寶寶的狀況好像真的好了很多。

      The baby’s face even looked much better than before.

      寶寶的臉色也明顯比之前好很多。

      Was it just a coincidence?

      到底是不是巧合？

      Or was there really something we could not explain?

      還是真的有什麼我們無法解釋的原因？

      I honestly do not know.

      老實說，我也不知道。

      But after that experience, I really felt that some things are hard not to believe.

      但經過那次之後，我真的覺得，有些事情真的很難叫人完全不相信。

      I can only say, “I don’t know.” 我只能說，我不知道。

      That blessed money may not only have helped the baby, but also comforted the mother.

      那個壓轎金可能不只安慰了小孩，也安慰了媽媽。

      When you are holding a baby who keeps crying and you do not know why, the hardest feeling may be, “What else can I do?”

      因為當你抱著一個一直哭、卻不知道原因的孩子時，最讓人無助的就是：「我到底還能做什麼？」

      Later, I started to wonder if we all have moments like this.

      我後來就在想，我們是不是都有這種時候？

      Normally, we are used to relying on ourselves.

      平常我們都習慣靠自己。

      When we have a problem, we try to find a solution.

      有問題就想辦法，有事情就解決。

      But sometimes in life, we face situations where we really do not know what to do.

      可是人生有時候就是會遇到一些，你真的已經不知道該怎麼辦的事情。

      You have done everything you can, asked everyone you can ask, and tried every method you can think of.

      你能做的都做了，能問的人也問了，能試的方法也試了。

      But there is still no answer. 可是事情還是沒有答案。

      At that point, faith may be something you can give a try.

      這時候，信仰可能就是一個可以拿出來試試看的方法。

      Some people pray to Mazu, some people pray at a church, and some people visit a shrine.

      有人拜媽祖，有人禱告，有人去教堂，有人去神社。

      Some people do not pray to any god. They simply talk to someone they trust.

      也有人不拜神，只是去找一個自己信任的人聊聊。

      The forms are different, but maybe they are doing the same thing.

      形式不一樣，但也許都在做同一件事。

      They help someone who does not know what to do feel a little more at peace.

      讓一個不知道該怎麼辦的人，重新得到一點安心。

      So now I think we should not be too stubborn about these things.

      所以我現在覺得，做人真的不要太鐵齒。

      I am not saying that you should stop solving your own problems.

      不是叫你什麼事情都不要自己處理。

      You should still see a doctor when you need one, and you should still solve the problems you can solve.

      該看醫生還是要看醫生，該解決的問題還是要解決。

      But when you have really tried your best, and you have done everything you can, but nothing works…

      但是當你真的已經努力過了，當自己能做的都做過了，還是沒有辦法……

      Then maybe it is not a bad idea to give faith a try.

      那信仰，拿出來用一下，好像也沒什麼不好。

      Because it may not only help you deal with the problem.

      因為它也許不只是在幫你處理一件事情。

      It may also comfort the part of you that is already tired.

      它也可能是在安慰那個已經很累的你。

      So，when nothing else works, give faith a try.

      所以，當其他方法都沒有效的時候，就給信仰一次機會。

      When we talk about the Ghost Festival in Taiwan, we usually think about offering food to wandering spirits.


      說到台灣的農曆七月，我們通常會想到準備食物來祭拜好兄弟。

      People prepare meat, fruit, drinks, snacks, and many other familiar foods.

      人們會準備肉類、水果、飲料、零食，以及許多我們熟悉的食物。

      But one day, I saw something that made me stop and wonder.

      但是有一天，我看到一樣東西，讓我忍不住停下來想了一下。

      There was a bowl of water spinach soup on the offering table.

      普渡桌上竟然放了一碗空心菜湯。

      I thought, “Wait, why water spinach?”

      我心想：「等等，為什麼是空心菜？」

      I eat water spinach all the time, but I had never thought about its connection with the Ghost Festival.

      我平常很常吃空心菜，卻從來沒有想過它和普渡之間竟然有關係。

      One folk saying describes it as, “We have the heart to treat you, but we do not want you to stay.”

      有一個民間說法是：「有心請你，無心留你。」

      The stem of water spinach is hollow, so people connected its empty center with the idea of not keeping the spirits here.

      因為空心菜的菜莖是中空的，所以人們把這個「空」和不把好兄弟留在陽間的意思連結在一起。

      We are happy to prepare food for you, but after you finish your meal, please go back to where you came from.

      我們很願意準備食物招待你，但吃飽之後，就請回到你原本來的地方。

      It is almost like saying, “Dinner is on us, but please don’t stay overnight.”

      這有點像是在說：「晚餐我們請客，但不好意思，不提供住宿。」

      There is another interesting detail about how people prepare the water spinach.

      另外，空心菜的做法也有一個很有趣的細節。

      Some traditional practices use only water to blanch the vegetable, without adding much seasoning.

      有些傳統做法會只用清水簡單川燙空心菜，不太加調味料。

      The vegetable may also be left slightly undercooked instead of being fully cooked.

      而且也可能不把它煮到完全熟透。

      This “half-cooked” idea is connected with the saying that the living and the spirits are not familiar with each other.

      這種「半生不熟」的狀態，被解讀成生人和好兄弟彼此並不熟悉。

      You can eat your meal, and then we can go our separate ways.

      你吃你的，我過我的，吃飽之後就各自離開。

      It is actually a very Taiwanese way of setting a boundary.

      這其實是一種很台灣式的界線感。

      There are also a few other folk stories about water spinach.

      關於空心菜，還有一些其他的民間說法。

      In the past, water spinach was cheap and easy to find, especially when food was not as plentiful as it is today.

      以前物資不像現在這麼充足，空心菜便宜又容易取得。

      Some people believed that a bowl of water spinach soup could make sure that even the weaker or less fortunate spirits had something warm to eat.

      有人認為，準備一碗空心菜湯，可以讓那些比較弱小、沒有搶到其他供品的孤苦好兄弟，也有一口熱湯可以喝。

      There are also stories about the hollow stem itself.

      另外，也有一些說法和空心菜中空的菜梗有關。

      Some folk stories say that its hollow stem could help spirits that had difficulty eating, while others connect its strings with repairing a spirit’s body.

      有些民間傳說認為，中空的菜梗可以幫助一些難以進食的好兄弟，而空心菜折斷時牽出的絲，也被聯想到修補身體。

      These are folk beliefs, not scientific facts, and different families may have different traditions.

      這些都是民間信仰，並不是科學事實，而且不同家庭的習俗也可能不一樣。

      What I find interesting is that the offering table has changed with our lives.

      我覺得有趣的是，普渡桌也會跟著我們的生活一起改變。

      Today, some people may even prepare dog food or cat food for pets that have passed away.

      現在，有些人甚至會為已經離開的寵物準備狗飼料或貓飼料。

      Some families may prepare a baby bottle with milk for a baby they have lost.

      有些家庭也可能會為離開的嬰兒準備一個裝著牛奶的奶瓶。

      The things on the table may look completely different from traditional offerings.

      桌上的東西可能和傳統供品完全不同。

      But the reason is actually very simple.

      但原因其實很簡單。

      People prepare something that reminds them of someone they miss.

      人們準備的，是能讓自己想起某個思念的對象的東西。

      Maybe this is why I find the Ghost Festival less frightening when I think about it this way.

      也許正因為這樣，當我用這個角度去想農曆七月時，就覺得它好像沒有那麼可怕了。

      The ghost you are afraid of may be someone else’s beloved family member.

      你所害怕的鬼，可能是別人最愛的家人。

      It may be someone’s parent, child, or even a beloved dog or cat.

      那可能是某個人的父母、孩子，甚至是一隻深愛的狗狗或貓咪。

      To you, it may be a ghost.

      對你來說，那可能是一個鬼。

      But to someone else, it may be a one-of-a-kind treasure that they think about every day.

      但對另一個人來說，那可能是他日思夜想、獨一無二的寶貝。

      Maybe that is what these offerings are really about.

      也許，這才是這些供品真正想表達的事情。

      We cannot bring someone back, but we can still remember them.

      我們沒有辦法讓一個人回來，但我們還是可以記得他。

      And maybe a simple bowl of water spinach soup is one small way of saying, “I remember you.”

      而也許，一碗簡單的空心菜湯，就是一種小小的方式，在說：「我還記得你。」

      So maybe the Ghost Festival does not have to be only about fear.

      所以，也許農曆七月不一定只能和恐懼連在一起。

      Sometimes, it is simply about remembering the ones we love.

      有時候，它其實只是關於記得那些我們愛過的人。
