Today’s episode is a solo one. I get asked tons of questions about podcasting

and I thought why not get a few more by asking on Instagram, and I added some of

those questions to this podcast as well as others I’ve gotten over the years.

I was inspired to start a podcast after listening to a few podcasts and falling in love with

that method of storytelling, and it resonated with me because that’s how I grew up

listening to my parents, aunts, uncles share stories, poetry etc. Its been important to me

as a Muslim woman to have our narrative told through our experiences and not through

stereotypes, and podcasting has been a great way for me to share the stories of

amazing Muslim women using their own voices to amplify their work and lives in a way

that is both motivating and inspiring to other women.

In this episode I talk about how and why I started podcasting and I touch on the process of podcast creation and I also answer questions I am often asked about podcast production.

So many women feel like they lose their identity as an individual when they become moms and she wants to help those women find their way back to themselves, regain their sense of self and pursue projects that bring them joy and financial security.

Today our guest is 25 year old convert to Islam Kaya Gravitter. Kaya is a writer and is currently working on publishing her first novel. Kaya also writes poetry and has written articles published on The Huffington Post, Yahoo! News, and Muslimgirl.com. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and International Studies and is an activist for change, in hopes of a better world.

 

Kaya touches on her early experiences when converting from Christianity to Islam and talks about some of the struggles that converts and other Muslim minorities are facing within the Muslim community and gives us her ideas on how such things can be improved.

Spending time with the people who actually matter.

I think as a teen or a young kid your friends can become your life and building a relationship with your sibling goes on the back burner. I get it your young and free and you think you have all the time in the world, but think about all the years you will miss out on with your siblings. I know now that I'm married and have my own kids, I feel like I missed out on a lot of time with my siblings I only realized after I moved away from home that my parents and siblings know me better than I know even myself sometimes and I wish I made more time for them back then instead of just being focused on school, work and my social life.

I think the same way we got into our cliques and spent more time out of the house back than now we are doing that with social media. It's like being home but not really being there because we're focused on living online than connecting with the people in our lives. I know that we are more likely to text than make a call which is great for staying in touch daily. but I’m talking more about real in-person interactions.

Also, your online life can spill over on to your real life. It's nice to meet new people and build relationships with like-minded people online but they’re just that online. In the real world your parents/ siblings need a text call, a visit, your kids need you to play pass outside, your real life friends will like a ladies night out and your spouse wants to have a conversation with you without your phone in your hand.

In today's world that’s so full of distractions and where being busy is idolized. we need to come up for air and really live our lives in a fulfilling way. beyond the glitz and glamor of social media where we are constantly bombarded by everyone's highlight reel. Make the intention to set aside time to disconnect daily and have real human interactions.

This is one of the new segments I’m working on for you guys throwback Thursday audio thoughts to my younger self.   Today’s throwback thoughts are to my younger self a young Fousia who was always an anxious child I think anytime when you immigrate from your own country at a young age and there’s a lot of uncertainty about your life you kind of have to in away reinvent your new normal.   So to that little girl who came from a very warm country and to snow and I am learning a new language making new friends and being away from most of your family that you grew up with I would say to her that all of that anxiety that you have to build up all of that stress of not knowing what life is going to be calm and having to be strong so that you don’t you know for the stress out everyone around you.   I would say it’s going to be OK you’re going to grow up to be a good person you’re gonna grow up to be someone who has build up resilience but at the same time.   I would say don’t be shy to ask for help don’t think that you’re always going to burden people with your your fears your your anxieties your stress the things that are bothering you-you will be a lot better off if you share those thoughts with people and think about what makes you happy instead of thinking about what makes other people happy or the fact that you have to put on when something happens to you and you’re afraid to share it because you don’t know how people are going to respond to all of that stress and anxiety and everything that you’ve got built up the unknowns that are coming your way and that you’re really worried about.   I would say just face them head on and do the best that you can and reach out to someone and say you know I’m scared it’s OK to be scared because once you sure that you knew she put those thoughts out there you’ll be able to move on from them in a more productive way instead of shoving all those feelings down on you’ll be able to figure out next steps how are you going to help yourself what are you going to do next so you know these are Thursday thoughts with Fousia.   I hope you guys enjoyed them if you’d like to share your own Thursday thoughts send them my way through the contact page on naptimeissacred.com or using the email tab on my Instagram page and I will share them on the podcast.   Thank you for listening don't forget to subscribe and leave a review in Apple Podcast.
