What are some lesser-known signs of narcissistic abuse that people often overlook?
The lesser-known signs of narcissistic abuse are subsequently the one that occur subtly and gradually and have the most detrimental impact. Because of the subtle nature of behaviours such as isolation, love-bombing, as well as gaslighting and guilt-tripping, these behaviours go unrecognised as the behaviour itself is subtle. A narcissist will gradually condition their victim to accept these behaviours so that they essentially become used to it.
A Narcissist will initially overwhelm their victim with love, affection, and attention in what is referred to as love-bombing so as to gain their trust and admiration. However, this phase is often followed by devaluation, where the narcissist criticises, devalues, or ignores the victim, causing confusion and emotional distress. The manipulative behavioural tactic of gaslighting involves the narcissist making their victim doubt their own thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. This ultimately culminates in the victim questioning their very sanity and reality. To make their victim completely dependent upon them, a narcissist will gradually seek to isolate their victims from friends, family, or support networks in order to maintain control over them. By limiting their social connections, the narcissist can increase the victim's dependence on them and make it harder for the victim to seek help or escape the abusive relationship
