  • 2022 November 27 - Supernumerary Rainbows over New Jersey

In today's image, we see at least five supernumerary rainbows in the image. These are causes when identically sized water droplets, less than a millimeter in size not only reflect light, but also cause interference between the light waves. This is something that can only happen if light behaves like a wave.

  • 2022 November 26 - Saturn at Night

In today's image, we see an image of Saturn from the Cassini spacecraft just a couple of days before it was plunged into the atmosphere at the end of its mission in 2017. Here we see the night side of Saturn, something that can never be viewed directly from Earth.

  • 2022 November 25 - NGC 6744: Extragalactic Close-Up

In today's image, we see the spiral galaxy known as NGC 6744. This is a spiral galaxy, larger than our own Milky Way, but still showing the distinctive characteristics of a spiral galaxy such as star formation in the spiral arms with blue star clusters and red hydrogen regions.

  • 2022 November 24 - Lynds Dark Nebula 1251

In today's image, we see Lynds Dark Nebula 1251. This is a region in the very early stages of star formation where stars are just beginning to form in the the densest dark globules present. The protostars imbedded in these are till in the process of formation and will eventually grow large enough and hot enough to become full fledged stars and emerge from the dusty cocoons in which they are currently forming.

  • 2022 November 23 - Earthset from Orion

In today's image, we see Earth setting behind the lunar limb as imaged recently by the Orion craft. This has recently made a close approach to the lunar surface - within 100 miles. It will be going into an orbit around our Moon as the craft is tested for the potential of returning humans to the Moon for the first time in 50 years.

  • 2022 November 22 - A Double Star Cluster in Perseus

In today's image, we see the double star cluster known as h & χ Persei. They are also known by their catalog designations of NGC 869 (left) and NGC 884 (right). These are two very young star clusters with star much younger and hotter than our Sun.

  • 2022 November 21 - The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble

In today's image, we see the Butterfly Nebula as imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope. This is an example of a planetary nebula which is the end state of a star much like our own Sun. The core will collapse down to a compact white dwarf star while the outer layers are expelled out into space giving the image that we see here.

  • 2022 November 20 - Airglow Ripples over Tibet

In today's image, we see the airglow in ripples over Tibet. The airglow is similar to the aurora but is caused by chemiluminesence in the atmosphere and is visible all around the Earth instead of just near the North and South Magnetic Poles.

  • 2022 November 19 - Artemis 1 Moonshot

In today's image, we see Artemis 1 lifting off from Earth and heading towards our Moon. It is scheduled to pass close to our Moon on November 21 before going into a retrograde orbit. The Orion craft is a preparation for perhaps future human visits to our Moon something that hasn't happened since Apollo 17 nearly 50 years ago.

  • 2022 November 18 - The Protostar Within L1527

In today's image, we see an image from the James Webb Space Telescope looking at the dark nebula L1527. Within the central dust disk between the two lobes is a protostar that is in the process of formation. It will become a star when the core temperature reaches the ten million degrees needed to be able to fuse hydrogen into helium.
