one thing, we kept trick-or-treating in the rain

the spray-painted hair started running down (running down my face)

 

but, of course, having spray painted hair in your eyes is not good.. but..

 

but, because it was raining, like everyone, all the kids, went home

 

and, I, my house was in kind of a normal neighborhood

like a nice area in Ashiya

 

So me and my friend were really wet, so we got wet from the rain, and we went home

 

my dad says “hey, let’s go trick-or treating with the car!”

and my dad says “Ok go run outside and trick-or-treat!”

 

and the people….they were surprised “whoa, you’re trick-or-treating, it’s like pouring rain!”

 

I remember each house gave like a huge, handful of candy, because they knew that no other people were going to come.

 

So we went to maybe, like twenty houses, but we got like huge...bag of candy.

 

So, American kids, we are very focused about, so each house, how many pieces of candy.

 

one piece is normal.

 

maybe the nice people “oh, you can have two pieces”

 

and sometimes, they say “take a handful”

 

so we got like 20 or 30, houses, they said you can take like, a handful, you can take the whole bag…

So, I would be walking, and there's no rain, right, it's, maybe it's cloudy, I'm walking, everyone looks normal, so they're not carrying the umbrella.

So OK, no one's carrying an umbrella, its not raining, so I'm safe, right.

But, it starts raining, and, OK, it starts raining, oh, i need to, you know, rush to work. And I look around, and everyone has the umbrella, everyone, like, I'm the only person that doesn't have an umbrella. Why? because of folding umbrellas. It was crazy, i thought, what, how is.... this is impossible!

AYA: Because even the weather forecast reporter said you should bring a folding umbrella today, because it may be rainy.

NATE: So, but, I thought, wow, its like magic, Japanese people are just magic, its like, it starts raining, and they have like, some special, like, a how do you say, like, doraemon, doraemon, thing, doraemon pocket and just "boom", umbrella appears, and they can use the umbrella.

NATE: so now I carry the folding umbrella, so I'm like the magic person now.

AYA: Yes, it's really hot.

NATE: but in San Francisco, it's a little, a little different. so, like, the temperature is almost the same as the spring or the fall.

AYA: oh really?

NATE: so, It gets hot during the day, but in the morning and the night, its not that hot, it's really cool actually, sometimes cold

NATE: Oh celsius, well, yea 80 or 85 is Fahrenheit, so it's F, right. Celsius, I think that's about 30.

AYA: ah 30, So it's not that hot?

NATE: no, i think 30 is hot for SF.

AYA: oh really?

NATE: so if its 35, thats like way too hot, so thats like a heat wave. do you have heat waves in Japan.

AYA: heat wave, what is it?

NATE: its like one or 2 days when its really hot. But its not, its very rare. so usually its, you know, 30 is like the maximum.

AYA: oh, its much cooler than i expected.

NATE: it is it is.

AYA: what kind of clothes should i wear while I'm there?

NATE: lets see. what do you wear in japan in the summer?

AYA: we wear t-shirts and tank tops

NATE: oh cool. in San Francisco you could, you could wear the same thing, so like tshirt or tank top. But you should bring, like, you should always bring an extra layer or two with you.

AYA: so maybe i should bring my cardigan or something?

NATE: cardigan? is that like a, like a sweatshirt?

AYA: ah, i don't know, what is..., a sweatshirt is?

NATE: yea in California its popular to wear like a sweatshirt, so its like a sweater, like a casual sweater, with, sometimes with a hood. or like a zip up sweater.

AYA: oh i get it, so i should bring one or if i don't have one, so, can i get some nice one in San Francisco?

NATE: yea, it should be a good souvenir. so you could get the sweatshirt with the golden gate bridge on the front, or, yea, i mean, you could just bring some, yea like, one or two, so like jackets or sweatshirts, and some long sleeve shirts.
