At DroneX, there was no shortage of ambition.

Drones are already being used by emergency services, delivery operators and infrastructure organisations, while work continues to make longer-range, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations more routine. 

NATS Altitude Host Russell Porter spoke to a line-up of the key players in this transformation:

• Andy Sage from NATS, identified uncrewed traffic management, or UTM, as a critical next step, particularly as demand grows in already busy areas such as London.
• Taryn Evans from the Metropolitan Police, explains how, for emergency services, drones are already becoming part of a much broader operational capability.
• John McKenna, sees.ai explains that autonomous drone inspection is moving beyond trials and becoming an operational capability for critical infrastructure.
• Kevin Houston from Manna Air, argues that, for a delivery business, the type of aircraft is only one part of the equation.
• Dave Pankhurst from BT discussed the role connectivity could play as larger and faster aircraft, including eVTOLs, enter the market.
• Praveen Raju from Wing discussed multiple simultaneous operations, where one pilot controls several drones and how Wing has secured UK approval for one pilot to operate up to four aircraft, while its US operations have gone considerably further.
• Sofia Stayte from the Department for Transport, expressed her ambitions for the UK to achieve routine BVLOS operations and then expand them nationally within the UK’s advanced and stable regulatory environment.
• Jan Domaradzki, Dronecloud and Simon Bachelor, British Transport Police discuss the collaboration between policing, technology providers and airspace organisations is turning complex drone operations into practical capability.
• James de Beauvoir-Tupper from the CAA highlighted the human factors involved in scaling these operations and how regulators need to understand how those responsibilities evolve as operations become more complex.

In this month’s Altitude, we look beyond the horizon of traditional aviation to explore one of the most promising innovations in sustainable flight: wake energy retrieval - a technique inspired by birds flying in formation that could help reduce fuel consumption on long-haul flights by up to 5% - the equivalent of 6 tonnes of CO2 emissions. 

We’re joined by Airbus’ Laura Montironi, the leader of Project Geese – the aptly named collaborative research initiative that successfully completed a series of eight trial flights over the North Atlantic late last year.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) has launched one of the UK’s most ambitious trials of uncrewed aircraft in support of frontline policing.

In this episode of Altitude, we speak to the team as they prepare for a bold new era - testing high-endurance, uncrewed aircraft capable of flying beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) in real operational scenarios.

From the control rooms at NATS to the runways of NPAS’ South West base, this episode explores how a blended fleet of helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and uncrewed systems could transform police air support. We’ll hear how traditional flying and policing expertise is being paired with advanced mission tech aboard next-gen drones to help one day save lives and stop crime.

We also hear from the UK Civil Aviation Authority on how the NPAS trial fits into a wider strategy to enable BVLOS drone operations in the UK, why sandbox projects like this one are enabling safe innovation in our skies, and what it will take to make drone policing a reality.
