Not many places rub one’s own mortality in their face quite like mountains covered by glaciers. They seem small at first, distant on the horizon as you leave Calgary on the TransCanada Highway, but they quickly rise to imposing peaks of nearly 4,000 metres. We drive deeper into the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by rugged, steep slopes and a sky painted in a deep blue that only alpine regions can create. Amidst this awe-inspiring mountain landscape are the Banff and Jasper National Parks, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although parts of Jasper National Park remain closed due to recent wildfires, both parks entice visitors with snow-capped peaks and abundant wildlife – though the solitude we hoped for is harder to find.
