During the last big rainstorm — we’ve been having a lot of those lately, our family did what we always do when the skies open up—we gathered in the garage to watch the show.
Sheets of water poured from the gutters, raced down the driveway, and disappeared into the street. The kids were fascinated by the temporary rivers forming right in front of the house. Then, in the middle of all the commotion, something unexpected appeared.
A small rodent suddenly emerged onto the driveway and was immediately caught in the rushing water. For a moment, it looked like it might be swept away entirely. Instead, it began swimming furiously across the current, paddling with surprising determination toward the side of the house. The kids (and me) erupted in squeaks and squeals as we watched its unlikely journey unfold.
Against the odds, the little creature reached the landscaping rocks beside the foundation. It scrambled onto a larger stone, squeezed between two gaps, and disappeared beneath the rocks as quickly as it had appeared.
We were witnessing one of our neighborhood's tiny tunnelers being forced from its flooded burrow in search of higher ground.
It's easy to overlook the small wildlife living alongside us until a moment like that pulls back the curtain. One minute you're watching rainwater rush down the driveway, and the next you're getting a front-row seat to a tiny survival story playing out in real time.
See you on the pathways.
