We’ve got a couple of tales for you today that dive deep into the wild and the weird sides of our relationship with nature. First up, we’re taking a stroll through “The Magic of the Winter Sky,” where we’ll gaze at the stunning celestial show of stars and auroras lighting up a frosty Northern forest. It’s all about appreciating the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer, and trust me, it’s a real sight for sore eyes!
Then we shift gears to a more serious note with “Alfie’s Story,” a heart-wrenching narrative about the unjust treatment of XL Bully dogs, highlighting how some human decisions can lead to heartbreaking consequences for innocent animals. This story isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s crucial to raise awareness about empathy towards our four-legged friends who suffer from misguided legislation.
So, whether you want to bask in the beauty of a winter night or wrestle with some heavy truths, we’ve got something for you. Buckle up and let’s dive in!
The episode begins with a profound exploration of two distinct narratives, each highlighting the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world.
The first tale, titled “The Magic of the Winter Sky,” invites listeners to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the nocturnal landscape, where stars, constellations, and auroras create a tapestry of wonder in the frigid embrace of a Northern forest.
In our second story, we tackle a subject that may not be suitable for everyone, particularly younger children. Storytelling is a powerful way to share knowledge and wisdom, but it has also long been used to express our feelings about injustice and wrongdoings.
As a storyteller, it is essential to reflect on the events occurring around us, especially those that disturb us. That emotional energy motivates us to speak out and take action.
“Alfie’s Story” is a challenging narrative that I felt compelled to write due to the uncaring and thoughtless attitudes some people have toward our animal companions and wildlife in general.
Alfie is an XL Bully dog, and the government has passed a law condemning all dogs of this breed to death, labelling them as dangerous. This decision includes loyal companions and family members who have never posed a threat. It is an archaic and reprehensible choice.
“Alfie’s Story” will be shared after our main narrative, so you can choose whether or not to listen. Regardless of your decision, I truly appreciate your compassion and empathy. If you do choose to listen,
I hope you understand that “Alfie’s Story” emerges from a sense of injustice. Even if we don’t own an XL Bully, we can still feel the pain and suffering caused by such a decision. Like me, I’m sure you are dismayed by the lack of respect and understanding some people show towards animals and the natural world.
Alfie’s Story intends to raise awareness that humans are often the source of many problems, yet we seldom learn from our mistakes, and it is the animals and nature that suffer as a result. This situation is deeply wrong, and I passionately desire to see change. I dedicate this story to all the XL Bully dogs that have been needlessly put to sleep due to this decision.

Gather 'round, folks. We're diving deep into the mystical marshlands of the Fens in England, where our story unfolds with the enchanting Tidyman. Trust me, he's not your typical ghostly figure lurking around.
This episode takes us on a wild ride through ancient folk tales, blending history, myth, and the magic of nature. Our charming Tiddy man isn't here to scare you; he's more like the neighbourhood superhero who helps locals during floods, all while keeping the boggarts and Will o' the wisps in check.
As we unravel this tale, you'll discover how the quest to save the Fens from the King's draining plans leads to an unexpected twist of fate, making it a perfect kickoff for our Halloween celebrations. So, grab your favourite cosy spot, kick back, and let's get lost in the wonders of storytelling together!
Welcome to a wild ride through the enchanting realm of nature storytelling! Picture this: the marshy Fens of England, where ghostly boggarts and will-o’-the-wisps roam under the cloak of night, and the locals are more than a little spooked.
But fear not! Out of the mists emerges the Tiddy man, a trusty spirit who, unlike his eerie companions, lends a helping hand to the frightened villagers.
As the rains come pouring down, the people call upon the Tidyman to save them from the floodwaters. But oh, what's this? The King decides to drain the Fens for farming, and chaos ensues! The crops fail, the cattle get sick, and the villagers are left in despair, fearing witches and dark magic.
Desperate, they turn back to the Tidyman, chanting for his aid beneath the new moon. Through evocative storytelling, we dive deep into the magic of the Fens, explore the balance between nature and human intervention, and celebrate the age-old tradition of folklore that connects us to the land and its spirits.
After all, when the locals gather to chant for the Tidyman, it's not just about water; it's about reclaiming their bond with the very earth they tread.

Welcome to series two of the Nature StoryTeller podcast. Come in and take a seat. It is another cool but bright spring evening, and we are all together to share another story from Nature Folklore.
This episode features local lore from the Lake District, a beautiful, scenic area northwest of England.
First, we introduce you to an elusive, mystical creature native to the Lakes and one of the many legends from those deep dark waters who shared its magic with us on the land. It is also said to have a taste for Ginger Biscuits!
Our main story comes from the Borderlands - which bridge the divide between the very north of England and the very south of Scotland.
I first heard it on a night like this when I was in the Lake District, gathered with friends to listen to a story passed on by generations of storytellers, and now it is my turn to share it with you.
So, if you are sitting comfortably, take a deep breath, relax and close your eyes as we share the fantastic tale of the Lad who herded Hares.
We hope you have enjoyed our tales. If you have a favourite story or a slice of local folklore you think we should be sharing, please get in touch with us.
Our email address is [email protected], or if you would like to hear more stories from nature folklore, visit our website www.naturestoryteller.org
Now it is time for me to return to the woodland, but Nature StoryTeller will return in May with more fascinating folk tales and stories from nature and folklore.

This is our special Samhain offering to you. These tales that I have had the pleasure to tell throughout this week on our spooky Halloween walks in the deepest, darkest Sussex to mixed groups from children of five and under to adults in their late eighties.

At Samhain they say, the veils between this world and the next is wafer thin. So thin, that you could reach through it with your arm. If that is so, then the fairies and spirits from the other realm can surely access our world with similar ease.
These tales are ideal for family groups or to be enjoyed on your own or as a couple. However, you are listening I hope these tales will take you on a journey deep into your imagination and help you to learn about the wonders of the natural world.
As the days grow shorter and the chill of autumn sets in, there's nothing quite as soothing as settling in for the night, surrounded by warmth and tranquillity.
And what better way to unwind than by listening to the timeless tales of nature that have been passed down through the ages?
These stories are more than just entertainment - they're a window into the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors, a way to stay connected to our roots and the natural world around us.
