    بھٹکا  ہوا  ہے  قافلۂ  عِلم  و  آگہی

    اُلجھی  ہوئی  ہے  زلفِ  مذاقِ  خِضر  ہنوز

    پھبکی  ہوئی  ہے  کشتِ  خس  و  خار  آج  بھی

    دہکی  ہوئی  ہے  دولتِ  برگ  و  ثمر  ہنوز

    ना आशना-ए सज्दा-ए नौ है बशर हनूज़
    ज़ानू-ए फ़िक्र से है बहुत दूर सर हनूज़


    उभरी नहीं है जौदत-ए गर्दूँ शिनास अभी
    बीना नहीं है दीदा-ए गेति-निगर हनूज़


    दीवानगी के दर पे हैं सज्दौं की बारिशें
    फ़रज़ानगी की राह में उढते हैं सर हनूज़


    रौ में है ज़ुल्मत-ए शब-ए तारीक की सिपाह
    सक्ते में है जलूस-ए तुलू-ए सहर हनूज़


    भटका हुआ है क़ाफ़िला-ए इल्म ओ आगही
    उलझी हुई है ज़ुल्फ़-ए मज़ाक़-ए ख़िज़र हनूज़


    फबकी हुई है किश्त-ए ख़स ओ ख़ार आज भी
    दहकी हुई है दौलत-ए बर्ग ओ समर हनूज़


    आलम है इस दयार का फ़र्ज़ंद-ए ना-ख़लफ़
    जाहेल है इस ज़मीन का लख़्त-ए जिगर हनूज़


    महसूल इस क़दर है के अल्लाह की पनाह
    आसाँ नहीं तिजारत-ए इल्म ओ ख़बर हनूज़


    होता है ज़ब्त सरहद ओ साहिल पे माल-ए अक़्ल
    मम्नू’ है दरआमद-ए फ़िक्र ओ नज़र हनूज़

His nazm are fiery, passionate and full of energy. His Ghazal and rubaaii are equally good. He was a secular humanist writing sharply and irreverently against colonialism, abuse of power, injustice and orthodoxy. Typically, josh’s compositions throb and overflow with energy and ‘josh/passion’. Here josh derides the intellectual paralysis of humanity. This is a long Ghazal-numa nazm, posted in two parts for easy reading.

    sar uRaana is an expression meaning chop heads off. While heads rain down in prostration at the door of ignorance, thinking heads are chopped off on the path towards knowledge.

    Here zulmat-e shab darkness of the night is symbolic of ignorance. zulmat-e shab-e tarrik darkness of the dark night is a bit of a redundancy but used for rhythm/harmony. Also, tuluu-e sahar the rise of dawn is symbolic of the rise of knowledge. Thus, the army of darkness/ignorance is on a relentless march, while the procession of dawn/knowledge remains in a stupor.

    Khizr (written and pronounce Khizar here to conform with the rhyme) is a legendary character mentioned in abrahamic texts. He is symbolic of exploration, seeking, long life and knowledge. Thus, the caravan of learning and knowledge wanders lost; and the hair of exploration are all tangled up. Here exploration is symbolized as a maiden with long hair and tangling up of her hair symbolizes going round and round in old thinking.
