When Mara Pomana was 23, she was introduced to network marketing. Something clicked, and she dove in, despite her parents' misgivings. A year in, she broke the six-figure mark. Mara's journey is one of success—but it wasn't without valleys. What Mara learned from the low points has transformed her. Listen to this episode of My Extra Mile with David T.S. Wood to hear how you, too, can navigate the obstacles in your way and come out even stronger.
In Today's Episode, you will learn:
What attracted Mara to network marketing? She was lit up by just the idea that she could design her day. Even if she worked 12 hours a day, it was something she was creating for herself. It was a foundation for herself and her family.
She led with her energy. She wasn't skilled in the system, but she infused her energy into others. She became a magnet. She showed everyone that it was possible to make it in network marketing. The story that you're telling yourself about your life is important. It sets your day and your business up for impact. So, what changed?
The slow and steady decline of 2020
Mara's business was going well, and then it just slowly started dying down. All of a sudden, she realized she needed to look at her numbers. She started doing webinars and focusing on Instagram. But things kept spiralling downward. She crossed a line she never thought she would cross, and she began to worry about paying her bills. She started waking up full of fear and anxiety, and it became her reality.
Mara quadrupled her activity, but it didn't make a difference. It felt like she had to rebuild all over again. Her mind and her inner critic became her worst enemy. She was at war with herself. She was struggling to be the magnet that she used to be. Worst of all, she didn't feel authentic.
How Mara recreated her story
Mara knew she needed to get into the right headspace at the beginning of every day. She couldn't just wake up and tune into her emails or phone. She needed to start from a place of abundance. Mara started having tough conversations with herself. She eased into affirmations. They only work when you believe what you're saying. Every day she got better at lifting her spirits. She learned to trust herself more, and she was making small incremental changes. Mara fought for herself.
She had to ask herself, "Is what I'm feeling right now attracting abundant things into my life?" Mara emphasizes that you have the responsibility to fill your cup up. You can't give when you're empty. People can feel your energy. Are you showing up in a way people will trust you? Your energy impacts the people around you—negatively or positively.
Mara started to think and behave with a vision for what she wanted in 5 years. She asked what her future self-did: What's her work ethic? How does she wake up? How does she speak with people? What's her posture like? What's her energy like? Who does she spend her time with? Who are her friends? She went deep. She needed to know if she was wasting her time or working smartly. It's hard to look in the mirror and say, "I could be doing more."
Surround yourself with the right people
Mara learned she was surrounded by a lot of "yes" people. They never encouraged her to grow and do more. You want people around you who will help you do that. They don't tell you what you want to hear—they tell you what you need to hear.
Are you surrounded by "yes" people? Or people who can help you go from point A to point B? Find someone you can be yourself around—your real, raw, self. Show up without your mask and let people see the real you. You have the power to always change your thoughts. Only you can discover what more you have to give.
