The pressures in the Auckland housing market continue to ease but that’s in sharp contrast to the rest of the country. The latest figures from www.realestate.co.nz show the supply of houses for sale is becoming much less of an issue in Auckland but it’s increasingly tight elsewhere. The figures show that while new listings of houses for sale nationwide fell 5.3% in April compared with April last year, they rose 3.7% in Auckland.

Passive funds are increasingly becoming activist shareholders by leaning on the companies in which they invest in a manner previously only seen with active investors. Jeff Gramm, who manages New York hedge fund Bandera Partners, believes shareholders are at a “weird juncture” where large investors who used to support vocal activists behind the scenes are coming out publicly themselves.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is riding high in the latest polls leading into the June 8 general election over Brexit. More surpringly, Scotland has become the Tories’ latest happy hunting ground. Mrs May visited Aberdeen over the weekend. Tory party leaders have treated Scotland as a no-go area for 30 years but are now considered the biggest threat to the Scottish National Party.

Prime Minister Bill English has come out swinging against claims the government withheld footage of an unmanned robot investigating Pike River Mine in 2011. Last night, Newshub aired some of the footage showing the robot inside the mine with workers making repairs also appearing to be inside the mine.

Intueri Education Group shares fell 52 percent to 1 cent, valuing the company at $1 million after it said the level of bids for its remaining colleges mean it wouldn't have a sustainable business after repaying debt and there'd be nothing to return to shareholders. The stock has fallen from $2.35 in Intueri's initial public offering in 2014, when it was taken public by Australia-based Arowana International. The IPO delivered $102 million to Arowana for selling its stake down to 24.9 percent and paid the $60 million cost of acquiring the now-defunct Quantum Education Group.

The Labour Party has again delayed releasing its general election candidate list, following reports former Alliance MP and high profile broadcaster Willie Jackson is upset with his placing. Labour’s chief press secretary Mike Jaspers says the list will now be revealed tomorrow – “these things take time,” he told NBR.

Renewed concerns about how New Zealand will fare as trade tensions flare up in America has forced the kiwi dollar to a near year-low. OMF foreign exchange manager Phillip Lindberg says it has been a “turbulent week” for the kiwi, which has underperformed against most of its major trading partners. The kiwi dollar spent last week falling against the greenback.

Angel investors plugged $69 million into young New Zealand companies last year, up 13% on the year before, with more going into follow-on rounds than new investment. The second half of the year was especially strong, with investment of $46.1 million, the latest Young Company Finance Index shows. The average deal size was $616,000.

One of the last key pieces of economic data before the Reserve Bank's next monetary policy statement will be released on Wednesday.
