Meridian Energy essentially needs the rain to stop before it can start benefiting from selling the electricity freed up by 2015’s deals relating to the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter. Under the deals, Contact Energy, Genesis Energy and other electricity companies cover 142 megawatts of the 572 megawatts of electricity that Meridian supplies the smelter.

A versatile new introduced grass could help New Zealand address some of the economic woes highlighted by a recent OECD report but is making little headway. The OECD report says New Zealand’s intensive dairy farming, road transport and industry have pushed up gross greenhouse gas emissions by 23% since 1990. Despite generating 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, New Zealand has the second-highest level of emissions per GDP unit in the OECD and the fifth-highest emissions per capita.

The slowing of house prices indicated in yesterday’s property market data is probably only a temporary lull, says a leading economist. Shamubeel Eaqub told the Property Institute's annual conference the slowing of credit growth which is already underway is going to see the construction of new buildings – housing and others – taper off.

A Ministry of Social Development (MSD) policy requiring social service providers to disclose information about all their clients is excessive and inconsistent with the privacy principles, Privacy Commissioner John Edwards says in a report released this morning. Court action to protect trade marks is usually the domain of the well-heeled and this is reflected in the latest decision from the Court of Appeal. In Omega SA (Omega AG) (Omega Ltd) v Guru Denim Inc [2017] before Justices Raynor Asher, Simon France and Mary Peters, Omega (owner of the "OMEGA" word and symbol trade mark Ω in relation to luxury watches) was unsuccessful in opposing registration by Guru (best known for its high-end jeans brand True Religion) of an upside-down omega symbol mark for clothing and lifestyle products in class 14 that includes watches and jewellery.

The global dairy market is at the closest it’s been to equilibrium in a number of years, according to dairy analysts. Dairy prices gained 1.6% to just over $3000 a tonne at this morning’s GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction, with whole milk powder up 2.4% to $2924 a tonne.
