Question to Chris and John – The legislature passed a law saying that historical statues could not be removed from public grounds unless there was either a safety issue or the land was needed for public purposes. For much of this time we focused on Silent Sam the monument dedicated to UNC Students in the Civil War. Recently there has been great controversy of the confederate statue in Chatham County and this week a judge halted the plan for moving it. Why haven’t we been able to resolve this issue? What should be done?

Question to Brad and Patrick – The House has passed and sent to the Senate a measure that would allow athletic booster clubs to charge in-state tuition for out-of-state athletes. It was estimated that UNC’s Rams club would save $5 million, NC State would save $2.4 million and East Carolina would save $2.1 million a year. But the bill says that the schools will not get additional funding from the state to cover the difference and will have to make up the difference in their annual budgets. We had this arrangement some years ago and decided to cancel it. What do you think of the idea now? Should the Senate pass it?

Is it fair to assume the companies will be held liable? How will our state deal with a settlement? Will it be like the tobacco settlement?

Question to Bev Perdue and Leo Daughtry – Several weeks ago I wrote a column about a fake census survey which was actually a fundraising letter from a political party. One of our viewers responded by sending me an envelope sent to occupant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, along with an American Community Survey. This survey, which said is was from the census bureau asked, among other things about the recipient’s legal status. I was under the impression the courts had said this was unconstitutional to ask. What should people do if they receive this form?

Question to John and Chris – It’s a well known fact that when legislation is sent to the Rules committee of either the House or Senate the message for that bill is “not now, not never.” But Senator Erica Smith has filed discharge petitions to remove two of her bills from the Rules Committee purgatory. Smith wants to remove her bill to require legislators and their staffs to take mandatory annual ethics training on harassment and discrimination. She also wants to resurrect her bill for North Carolina to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Have you ever heard of one of theses discharge petitions succeeding? What do you think of Smith’s efforts? Is this just political grandstanding in he quest to get the Democratic nomination for the US Senate next year?
