NCUIH Native Healthcast presents “Where We’ve Been & Where We’re Going” hosted by Vickie Oldman, with special guests Dr. Donald Warne and Zoë Harris. 

In this exciting episode, Dr. Warne, a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Tribe, describes the historical contexts that affect Indigenous public health programming and shares his vision for a robust and inclusive health system that can meet the unique needs of indigenous communities. In the later portion of this episode, Zoë Harris, a citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, discusses how Urban Indian Organizations can utilize infection prevention and control resources from Project Firstline to serve and protect our Indigenous relatives. 

In this episode, we discuss methods on informing and educating healthcare workers on germ spread using the Body and the Healthcare Environment Reservoirs. Our first guest is Shay Drummond (MPH RN CIC), who works as an Infection Preventionist with the CDC Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion and is a subject matter expert on this topic. Our second guest is Evelina Y. Maho (MAdm., Diné), who is the Public Health Program Manager at NCUIH. Listen to the episode to hear more about infection prevention and control, including suggestions on how staff at UIOs can put what they have learned into action.

Today's episode features subject matter experts Karen Kwok (MSN, FNP-BC, MPH) and Marie Zephier, MPH as they lead the discussion on infection prevention control tips for healthcare staff.  

Karen holds a Dual Master’s degree in Nursing and Public Health and is a nationally certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She has over 20 years of experience working in health equity, including coordinating care for UIO patients in San Francisco. She has provided direct patient care and service delivery operations workflow in infection prevention and control.

Marie is a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation and was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Marie serves as a consultant with the National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH). As an ECHO support trainer, facilitator, and coordinator, Marie assists in the team’s presentation adaptation by NCUIH staff. She provides training and technical assistance to UIO healthcare and frontline staff on infection prevention and control.

Our guests for this episode include Kyle Mitchell and Dr. Abigail Carlson. Kyle is Diné  (Navajo) and is Storyteller and facilitator working with the technical assistance division at NCUIH in Washington, DC. Kyle is a decorated army veteran and a purple heart recipient, as well as the bronze star with valor. Dr. Carlson is one of the infection control advisors and subject matter experts for Project FIRSTLINE and works within the  CDC's division of healthcare quality promotion. She advises the team on the development of the project first-line curriculum, supporting resources and training modalities, serves as a primary subject matter expert for Project FIRSTLINES training opportunities, and helps provide strategic directions for the future of the collaborative.
