  • The Rock & Roll Shrink Radio Show Episode 38 - Gaming Addiction
Let’s talk tonight about Gaming Addiction.
An article was published on January 4th, 2018, by Gamespot.com, in which they called attention to the fact that The World Health Organization plans to add "gaming disorder" in its list of mental health conditions. And I quote: "The World Health Organization, the public health division of the United Nations, has released its newest list of classified diseases--and "gaming disorder" is included. A draft of the WHO's International Classification of Diseases (ICD) describes this as being characterized by a "pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour" online or offline.
The description goes on to say that gaming disorders can include the following: "1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences."
Our regular listeners of this show may be well aware that we do not support the disease model of addiction on this show. Let's start by reviewing how we define Disease and Addiction. We will explain, discuss, and analyze this proposal, and critique their findings with regards to this new declaration. We will review a little bit about the addiction model in general, and how it may or may not actually apply to modern gaming.
We look forward to exploring this new development, and helping our listeners understand what it means for gamers and the mental health community.

  • The Rock & Roll Shrink Radio Show Ep. 37 - ADHD & ASD
Let’s talk tonight about ADHD & ASD. The focus of tonight’s discussion is about the connections and differences between these pathologies, and the significant changes in diagnoses and treatment in the last couple of decades, and how that has affected those who may have one or more of these pathologies, as well as the professionals who help and treat them.
According to some clinicians in the field, there has been a recent noted uptick in ASD diagnoses, while ADHD is becoming less common, and we will examine potential explanations for this (could it be better understanding of either or both, and a change in category for patients?).
Additionally, recent changes in terminology and diagnostic criteria don’t appear to have permeated common culture yet, or are not universal yet, so we will be covering this as well, so that our listeners will be more informed, especially if they wonder whether these diagnoses could apply to themselves or a loved one or family member, and if they should seek professional help.
We will first define and explain each of these terms, and a couple of other relevant ones. Then, we will talk about their shared histories and differences, as well as common misconceptions and professional points of contention, and last we will cover how this affects diagnoses and treatment.
Please note that some points raised tonight are points of hot debate in professional or patient communities, or both. These debate is heated enough to where I feel compelled to remind our listeners of this multiple times this evening.
Before we begin tonight’s topic discussion, let’s take a moment for “The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls,” a moment of rock music trivia stories, as recounted by Dr. Mathis.
