    Tonight’s topic came up because of an old article recirculating on social media, purporting that Addiction is actually a brain disorder, according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). 
    This is a debate that has been hashed and rehashed for many decades, especially since the advent of the 12-Step model which advocates confessing no power or control over one’s own choices and abdicating responsibility for it over to religion or a higher power.
    We will explain tonight how Addiction is not a disease or a pre-existing brain malfunction, but a disorder that is exacerbated by choices we make which can lead to symptoms and consequences that later on can prove to be excruciatingly painful and difficult to halt or recover, and why these still do not make it a disease. 
     
    Tonight, we will discuss:
    • What is a Disease, in the Psychological sense?
    • Why is it that various medical professionals continue to rehash this decades-old argument? 
    • Why do some disease-model therapies appear to help people anyway? (Changing brain chemistry)
    • If Addiction is not a Disease, then what exactly is it, and why? 
    • Recovery resources that support the Addiction Disorder model
