  • The Laquan McDonald Saga - Part 2

In this episode N'DIGO Studio continues its discussion about the brutal murder of black Chicago teen Laquan McDonald and the issues this horrific incident raises. We are joined again by Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston - The Coalition For A New Chicago, and Pastor Marvin Hunter - Laquan McDonald's great uncle.

We discuss what could motivate police officers to commit such crimes against black people. We explore the inherently racist laws that exist within our legal system that allow events like Laquan’s murder and other racially motivated crimes to take place.

Rev. Livingston explains why he is working to encourage politicians to not vote for the current FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) contract and instead work towards a contract that supports black people and represents them in the right way. We discuss how changing the FOP contract here in Chicago would send a message to the country at large and hopefully inspire just reform on a national scale.

We explore practical steps that we can take to work towards a more fair and just legal system. We discuss the history of oppression against black people as it relates to the legal systems that operate in the United States of America. In order to influence change it needs to start with education and political action.

  • The Laquan McDonald Saga : Change. Shift. Positioning. Part 1

In this episode N'DIGO Studio discusses the brutal murder of black Chicago teen Laquan McDonald by white police officer Jason Van Dyke. Our guests on this episode are Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston - The Coalition For A New Chicago, and Pastor Marvin Hunter - Laquan McDonald's great uncle.

On October 20th, 2014, officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17 year old Laquan McDonald 16 times in the back. The subsequent reaction from the local community and the media led to Chicago getting a new Police Superintendent, a new States Attorney and a new Mayor.

Rev. Livingston explains his experiences and involvement with the peaceful marches that took place following Laquan McDonald's murder. Rev. Livingston breaks down how the former Mayor of Chicago attempted to withhold the footage of Laquan McDonald’s murder and why this was wrong. We touch on the systemic racial discrimination that had existed in our political and social systems for years and years.

Pastor Marvin Hunter explains how he was able to maintain a calm and peaceful perspective in the light of his nephew's murder. Pastor Hunter explains how he is working to peacefully change the moral and legal issues that allow situations like Laquan McDonald's murder to occur. Join us as we discuss the case and the broader topics of urban violence and systemic oppression.

  • Black Women Entrepreneurs

In this episode N'DIGO Studio explores the topic of black women entrepreneurs. Our guests on this episode are Chairman of Midway Broadcasting Corporation and Author Melody Spann Cooper, Interior Designer and Business owner Frantzie Bourdeau-Griffin, and Brand Strategist and Transformational Speaker Jai Slaughter. There are over 1.5 million black women owned businesses in the US. Black women are the most educated group within the US population and among the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs. This all sounds great but black women entrepreneurs and black women in business still face challenges.

We discuss Melody’s new book ‘The Girlfriend’s Guide To Closing The Deal’. Melody explains the ‘Queen of the Circle’ concept, suggesting that we need to continually get out of our comfort zone in order to grow rather than remain stagnant. Melody recounts some of the challenges she faced in her career as a young African-American woman in a business world dominated by older men.

We talk with Frantzie Bourdeau-Griffin about how she first got into design and went on to build a successful business that focuses on affordable yet stylish home wares.

Jai Slaughter talks about how a bad experience in a previous corporate role drove her to reinvent her professional career. She explains how she went on to become a successful Brand Strategist, Transformational Speaker and founder of I AM the Collection.

Finally we discuss how Frantzie and Melody navigate working alongside their husbands in their businesses and how their partnerships have helped them thrive together in business. Tune in to gain insight into how these women succeeded in business and life and how you can too.

  • Jim DeRogatis : Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly

In this episode N'DIGO Studio interviews Jim DeRogatis, a Chicago-based journalist, music critic and author of 10 books including Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly. In 2000, Jim received an anonymous tip indicating that R. Kelly was grooming young girls and exploiting them for his own sexual pleasure. Jim broke the story in 2000 but it wasn’t until almost 20 years later that justice was served.

Listen in as we discuss with Jim why it took so long for R. Kelly to be brought to justice. We explore how R. Kelly’s own childhood was impacted by abuse and how this might have contributed to his abusive behavior years later.

We examine the fact that R. Kelly’s victims were reluctant to step forward following their abuse because they felt that, as young black women, society would not give their case the attention it deserved. We touch on why the rumors around R. Kelly’s predatory behavior was largely ignored for many years and how he used his influence and wealth to keep his dark secret life from becoming exposed.

Learn more about Jim DeRogatis and his projects at jimdero.com and check out his book Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly.
