In 1968, Robert Sheckley imagined a city with an artificial consciousness, built to talk with its residents so they'd never feel alone. Today we call it ChatGPT.In this episode I sit down with my good friend Solaye Snider (literature lover, longtime NGO and climate worker, and the person who got me back into reading fiction) to explore Sheckley's cult sci-fi novel Dimension of Miracles. An ordinary New Yorker named Tom Carmody wins a galactic prize by mistake, and getting home turns out to be the hardest problem in the universe: not just where Earth is, but when, and which one.Along the way we meet gods who are just as confused as we are, a world-builder who made Earth as a six-day rush job, a lonely god who invented love, a museum of garbage, and a predator assigned to Tom by the laws of the universe. In this episode we discuss:

Analytical thinking is often exposed as being "crippled by fear," where the compulsion to gather all the facts is a defense mechanism intended to control reality. This fear causes individuals to choose familiar pain or experience decision paralysis (like the scenario described in Sylvia Plath's poem) rather than confront the unknown and risk being wrong. Inner work, according to men's work facilitator Ian Coll, is not about change but a "remembering process" to return to the pure self beneath life's conditioning and trauma. We discover that existence cannot be engineered or optimized for the avoidance of pain. "Life with a cheat code isn't life" - the necessary antidote to this logic-based, fear-driven existence is cultivating wonder and curiosity, which can soften the toxic recursive loop.

An interview with Ma Anand Sheela, known for being the prolific former spokesperson of Rajneeshpuram in the 80s, working under Osho.
