Publisher's Summary:
Emerson "Emi" Blake dropped out of culinary school to care for her ailing mother, but she has bigger dreams than running St. Helena's most popular pita cart. First on the menu: upgrade to a gourmet food truck. A new part-time job as a personal chef will definitely provide the funds, but it also forces her into close contact with her one and only one-night stand, Dax Baudouin, who's daring her to try a second taste.
Former army Ranger Dax has a clear mission: come home, get healed, and get gone. Yet Emi's tough-girl exterior and hidden soft side are even harder to resist than her mouthwatering baklava. After years of battles, he knows better than to try and rescue anyone - not that she'll let him get close enough to try. Truth is, Dax is starting to think that Emi's the one person who can save him...if he can just persuade her to give him another shot.

I'm glad this wasn't my first Marina Adair book....
First I must say that have read all of Marina Adairs books and enjoyed them...until this one. I am surprised I finished it to be honest. I really didn't care for Emerson, why is she so mad at that world? Because one guy broke up with her because he couldn't handle all her responsibilities? It sucks but it's not enough to have the major trust issues she has. Then again, there weren't many details about that relationship so maybe I'm supposed to believe the relationship lasted several years rather than weeks as the details led me to believe. She has a very loving family and a great and caring best friend in Harper. Yes, her mom died young but again, this does not explain her trust issues. I found her general attitude to be obnoxious with the lack of a valid back story to explain her anger. She's angry because she has to help her grieving father and little sister cope with life without the wife/mother? Really not feeling sorry for her. Then there's Dax, your typical handsome guy, equipped with washboard abs and a commitment phobia. Why aren't authors tired of writing the same male character? And my last gripe with this book is the ending. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll just say it felt like Marina Adair had a deadline to meet so she just ended the book abruptly. I will read the next one because I love that these books are set near where I live and as I said, I enjoyed all her books prior to this one so I really hope it's better.
Another awesome book from Marina Adair! <3
I just love how Marina's books pull you into her worlds. I was hooked from the very beginning of this story, which was no surprise but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. I love the emotions in her stories and the complexities of her characters. And damn you, Marina, for making me cry on an airplane!!
Oh the feels in this book. My heart is happy!! I really enjoyed Emerson and Dax's story. They had met (lol) previously and this book is their story, how they were brought together again. It's funny, sad sweet and quite hot at times.
Emerson has had to deal with death, being the one in the family holding everything together while she gave up her dream. She's trying to find her place in the world again. Dax is a soldier who has had to deal with the ugly side of war and learning how to piece his life back together again as well.
