See if they are publicly traded

Click profile, did you learn something about them that you didn’t know?

Decide what you want:

Equity

Dividends

Click summary, do they pay a dividend?

Aggressive growth

Click “graph” -> 5Y.Which way is it going?

No reason to buy a stock in a constant decline, even if dividends are being paid.

Investopedia, yahoo finance, td ameritrade all have great information

Most important thing, invest in what you know and trade what you can understand

Circle of competence. You don’t need to know everything about every stock to earn money.

Just start with a small few and learn their dance, if trading

If investing, start with companies you interact with that you feel will be around for a long while longer

Simplest technical tool there is

Line, overlaid on the graph connecting the highest peaks or lowest bottoms of price action

Ascending trendline or descending

The idea: if price breaks above or below the line, a potential change in trend is signaled

Validity

Must connect 2 or more peaks or bottoms. More lines of “contact” the stronger the line (and emotional signature for traders actions)

Connecting the close of bars, not the wicks (extremes)

Indicates points traders were willing to hold their positions vs extremes that didn’t hold

Length = strength

Change in trend signal doesn’t mean to act, merely an indication to monitor price action

May be a complete reversal, consolidation (sideways) or become more aggressive (steeper trends harder to maintain)

Pro-tips: 

volume provides a clue to strength of trendline violation

A break with low volume indicates less enthusiasm among traders and potential false breakout, or whipsaw

Extended trendlines: can extend line out past current time period to anticipate movement (not guaranteed though)

Support becomes resistance

Forming channels when possible (trend line above and below a trend)

Potential to trade in-between channel and spot exhaustion at support for reversals

Trading w/ the major trend is a “natural hedge,” or protection

Starting w/ broader market trend, sub-market, and then specific market (SPY -> Tech sector -> semi-conductors -> AMD)

Starting w/ 3-5 years out, weekly. Then 1 year daily chart. Then narrowing to intraday

Even if you’re an intraday trader, work from hourly down to your preferred time frame

Real example:

Even the recent “crash” was within the bull market uptrend of the last 5 years. Market retraced back to the low at the end of 2018 but failed to fall below and rebounded sharply back to highs (street saw “V” shaped recovery).

Trend was preserved, despite the sharp drop.

Those who maintained their positions and waited to add when the correction came off support were able to add to their long-term positions and reduce their dollar-cost average. NEVER PANIC, especially when the broader trend is sustained.
